Should my car have a catalytic converter?

I have a 1982 12A, rear drum brakes, sunroof, no power steering or power windows. I believe that makes it a GS model. This car does not appear to have a catalytic converter. It has the air pump and what looks to be a disconnected pipe sticking out of the air pump that went to god knows where. Am I going to have to get a catalytic converter to have this vehicle pass inspection?

All US FBs had converters. Do you need one for inspection, check your local or state laws.

I live in Maine, I definately need one.
Oh my god, what the fuck. I just looked up on mazdatrix.com for a stock converter.

EXH CONVERTER MONO 81-82 40-4000-N201 $1,909.75

I can't belive this. I paid $600 for the car, if it costs me $2K to get it on the road, I dont know I'm going to crap myself.
I think ill shop around a bit...

If you really need a converter you could try and get a universal stainless steel one off of ebay. Just search for "Catco". I don't know what the laws are like in Maine but if you wait a year I believe your RX7 will reach classic status and usually will no longer need any type of emissions check...just a safety check. I think this means you don't have to have a converter on there.

Excellent, I probably won't have it on the road until next summer anyway. However, I did just do a little bit of pricing and it looks like napa saves my ass once again:

Catalytic Converter - Direct Fit
Item#: EXH15760
Price: $139.00

Catalytic Converter Air Tube - Universal
Item#: EXH35574
Price: $27.99

This is much more acceptable.
Of course, I had wanted to do full RB exhaust system, so I might buy a cheep 30$ ebay converter to put on, get stickered, and then take off. That is probably the most cost effective way to go about this. Then I can save my old exhaust system when I get the RB, and every year for inspection temporarily swap it out; Unless of course I can get away with it being a classic car. I will research that thoroughly. In any case, thanks so much for your prompt responses!
