shot in the dark

does this sound like something major?

This is a classic all original RX-7 w/ collector plates. It has an automatic transmission w/ O.D. There is no obvious rust but has several small dents.
This car has not been run for 3 years and although it turns over O.K. I have not been able to get it to started recently.
I have checked all of the obvious troubleshooting fixes and still can't isolate the problem. This car will need to be trailered or towed off of my property since it is not in drivable condition.
I do not have the time to work on it at the moment but believe it can repaired and used on an everyday basis.

this is a 1985 rx-7 12a with 104k miles

its probably not enough information but id thought id give it a try here.

at first he said it may be a carb problem or an electrical sensor problem is either common?

try clean gas and some starting fluid??

mine is always harder to start the longer it sits...

does it have spark??

BlackFireRX7 08-30-07 08:03 PM

o yea and change the oil before you try to start it again that old stuff is no good for your engine!!

and i, being anal, would change the oil again after a heat cycle or two...

You have spark and gas?

Kentetsu 08-31-07 06:14 AM

As long as you have spark/gas, then it may just be flooded. Grab some Seafoam from an autoparts store, and dump a couple ounces down the carb. She should start up with a little coaxing...

CHANGE FUEL FILTER
;)
(under car, in front of driver rear tire)
If not correctly stored with gas preservative, could have a tank of bad gas, or worse the tank could have corrosion/rust/sludge from condensation from sitting too long with partially filled tank. And make sure you can hear the fuel pump running when ignition on - its right there with the filter under a metal cover (removable)-
good luck and welcome!

It's an 85, so the fuel pump won't start up until it verifies that the trailing ignition has spark. If the trailing ignition is working properly, then the pump will start working once you start cranking...

What our newbie failed to state is that this is a car he was considering buying.
