Shifter broke in half!?!?
Well, today I decided why my shifter was wobbling so much, so I lifted up the boot bezel, and picked up on the shifter, and 1/2 came out in my hand. There's like a female end that the knb is attached to, filled with rubber, and then there's the male end, still bolted to the transmission. What the hell happened here? I will take pics asap.

Here's what I'm talking about, the female end goes on top of the male end, still installed on the transmission.

LOL....... I cant tell ya. But if you need one, I can send you one for the cost of shiping it. I do believe I have and extra one. That is, mine came out of a 82gs. Let me know.

HA! That is hella funny. I feel I almost waisted my money on a short shifter! |
and here I actually had to work to get mine to come apart, some guys have all the luck, sheesh
time for a short shifter upgrade:D
mine does that too actually lol i thought it was just a missin bolt i just dont pull up lol
how do you usually get it apart?
Short shifters suck. Now proper short throw shifters are a different story.
I like my short shifter
I like mine to, and if I am not mistaken, Mazdatrix's has a throw shift on it....... mine sticks our more than stock.
Mine did that also. I took a butane tourch heated it. It held for awhile then came back off. Go to Sears, tell them you want "monkey" glue, it ain't cheap either. It will hold it on till the thing rusts to dust.
What is monkey glue? What all does it bond to? There are many applications where I could use a very good glue from time to time.

I believe he is talking about Gorilla Glue "Toughest Glue on the Planet" is what they advertise. The shit is very universal and DAMN strong. We sell it at my hardware store (true value), almost any home depot should have it.
Think I'll go with the "thread it" idea. Anyone know the size of the die i should use?

Before you thread a shift knob on the lower half of your shifter, I would suggest wrapping it in a cloth, about washcloth size, wrap that with the venerable duct tape, and try it out. You may find that a short shifter is not what it is cracked up to be. Short throw shifters, on the other hand, work very well.
If you do decide to glue it, be VERY CAREFULL with that glue! it is runny when wet, and will stick whatever it comes in contact with........................don't ask ;)

Years ago, we made a short shifter by heating the stock shifter to remove the factory glue. Trimmed the upper aluminized section and re-glued it using industrial glue. Then one night at the drag strip, while shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, the shifter came off and I was left with a little stubb (less than 2” long). Not bad considering that it took almost 2 years of abuse before it fell apart. |
Anyone know the thread pattern for the shifter? I've felt a short shifter before, and I don't mind it. Besides, I can't afford 200 bucks for a short throw just yet.
