haha, yeah those are kinda ugly dude

maybe just not my style

bkm_rx7 07-19-04 07:02 PM

hey, i never said i was 18!!! there should be a xxx rating for this thread!

bkm_rx7 07-19-04 07:03 PM

wait, thats just a shift knob...WHEW!!!

RotaryRyan 07-19-04 10:16 PM

what did you use/how did you make it?

leif 07-19-04 11:34 PM

I'm disapointed...it look super nice in the car...mybe the pics are from a weird angle...but it looks super nice.very traditonal...but each to his or her own

maybe you guys would like it better if it was carbon fiber with LEDs that spelled "RICE"

jays83gsl 07-20-04 05:16 AM

No, really, is that a wooden Egg? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but it looks like you literally found a wooden egg at a hobby store, turned it upside down, and stuck it on your shift knob. I know I shouldn't talk like that, but, that's what it looks like!
And don't go saying all that rice stuff either. That's not very nice :D
Myself, I'm just gonna get the stock shift knob, that's that. Go great with my Red/Black interior :)

bouis 07-20-04 06:28 AM

Huh. I personally don't like it, either. It *is* classic, but the shifter and instrument panels on an FB aren't "classic." Maybe on an SA...

My dad used to make shift knobs like that on a wood lathe. He even offered to make one for my car out of cocobolo or purple heart or some other exotic wood, but I declined. I could see the disappointment in his face...

Personally, I prefer the look of the stock black knob from the 84-85 cars. Most folks don't know this, but you can get them new at the dealer for $35!

Actually I like the old wooden 'palm' shift knobs with the shift pattern burned in the top. They are not oblong, rather kinda squat with a flat top.

The only place I have seen them is on Z parts restoration sites (old 240,260 Z's had them). I had a '75 Celica GT with one that had some leather wrap around it.

Something about the feel that is much, much nicer than a solid metal one.

IMO- hands were meant to wrap around wood and flesh! :P

A 7 ball from a pool table works nice, and you get to tell the story of how you stole it.

leif 07-20-04 09:40 AM

I found the wood...Not sure if its an egg, but i like the shape...it feels nice to shift...and sits a little lowwer than stock...i got the idea reading an article on the porsche 917...about how they were all composite...and new technology...and then the car was all done, except they still needed a shift knob...so one of the "old school guys" went to his work bench and made a wooden one as kinda a protest to the super high tec new ways...and it stuck, and all of the 917s after that had wooden shift knobs.

Tom 07-20-04 09:54 AM

Here's the old palm styles I like

leif 07-20-04 10:20 AM

victoria british sells those for the firsg gens too.....only they say RX-7 on the top

85rotarypower 07-20-04 10:27 AM

Well, I kinda like my 8 ball or "rice" style shift knobs. I switch them every so often. If I want the shifter to feel nice and smooth, make it easy to shift, I use the 8 ball. If I want a sporty kinda shift then I use the rice style one.

Bolox 07-20-04 11:13 AM

i got a schweet short chodey shifter knob from the new ford falcons... fits perfectly in the hand

and makes for a nice short shift

its aluminium (i think) with a thick leather band around it.. very nice indeed

Lint 07-20-04 01:14 PM

My SA has a wooden shift knob
I dont see whats wrong with the egg style one.. it looks decent

©ØÐËߣüË 07-20-04 02:15 PM

no rice here.

mcnannay 07-20-04 03:45 PM

hey im not trashin your knob or anything, i just prefer the stock look....im also ditching the rice comment

jays83gsl 07-20-04 04:23 PM

Okay, time to be CONstructive rather than DEstructive :D
How about you slice off a bit at the top, make it more like the old 'palm' knobs someone earlier mentioned? Makes it look less like an egg too ;)

mcnannay 07-20-04 05:50 PM

yeah actually i like the wood, it can look real good, i just don't care for the shape...at all

if you shaped it like the stock shifter knob that would be badass

or even more ergonomic, im sure you can come up with something

leif 07-20-04 07:42 PM

like the pistol grip on a hemi-cuda??...if you shift fast there is no reason why you need ergonomics...look at the shift knobs of real sports cars....its only import fakers that have those (ie neon SX 2.0)

mcnannay 07-20-04 08:03 PM

sometimes i do shift fast, but most of the time im just cruising around, and i like to rest my hand on the knob sometimes, but most of all im interested in how clean it looks, not how flashy and "rice" it looks...come on man im not trashing your hard work, just saying its not me, it just needs something else....

but i don't belong posting in this thread cause i like the stock knob, have fun and enjoy them...Good work!

leif 07-20-04 10:05 PM

Im just conversing...I always have done what i liked...by the way...a friendly FYI...resting your hand on the knob will mess your synchros up and you will have to double clutch...
