She Wont Fire!
 

So i just finished my brand new fancy rebuild on my 12a for my 84 GS. Now it wont fire up. All the vacuum lines are accounted for, its getting fuel, its got compession, and it has brand new sparks that are known to be working. All she does is crank and crank and pop every once in a while but never fire up.

I've tried holding the throttle wide open, pumping it, the choke, nothing at all, and combination of each. Nothing is doing it. I figured it must be timing. So i took the fan off and the shroud off and rotated the front pulley so the right yellow line on the pulley is aligned with the marker pin on the engine. Then I pulled out the distributor, lines up the dent in the gear with the marking on the shaft and put it back in. Then i rotated it maybe 2mm to the right as I have heard is the key.

My question is, before I try to fire it in the morning, did I do the timing correctly and does this seem like a timing problem or something different?

did you check your ignitors? make sure you're getting spark to the plugs, obviously your trailing is working or you'd have no fuel nor tach.

Yeah I know for a fact Im getting spark

With the FB's it's possible that your pulley (with the timing marks) is rotated out of position - - it can physically go on 4 ways, and only one is correct. There are a number of threads around about who to make sure your marked TDC is actually top dead center.

So I need to pull it off, rotate the key to 9 o clock and put it back on more or less?

Does this seem like a timing issue to you guys?

first of all man, chill lol. some of us have to work so wait atleast 24 hrs, anyone with the knowledge will try to help. you gotta understand that not all of us have time to stand by the computer 24/7.

now, it looks exactly like what my car was doing when my ignitors went. i was getting fuel and spark but i guess it was very weak spark? idk. try cleaning your ignitor grounds (the brass where the screw go through). testing them, i'm not sure on the procedure for that, or if you got spare ones replace them and see if it works. make sure you put some of that dielectric grease so it doesn't fry them.

you said it was a "fancy" rebuild, have you tried pull starting it? i know some of my friends have had to do it before with rebuilds specially bridgys so you may wanna give that a shot :dunno:

Don't pull the actual main pulley (held in by the one large center bolt); just the outer pulley that bolts onto it (4 small bolts) which bears the timing marks.

If you pull the main pulley from an assembled engine while it is horizontal, you'll mess up your front bearing stack when you put it back in.

Would the ignitors out of an FC work? My buddy mike blew his motor, maybe i can buy his lol.

Im just gonna keep trying different spots on the pulley to see if they do the trick. If not i have a mechanic coming out monday to take a look

the FC ignitors are in the coilpacks as far as i know. so ...no.

if you know you're getting fuel and spark and your ignitors are good, everything is set and you know for sure that it should start, try pulling it...you may have some bitching seals lol

Pulling the motor or pull starting the car? Its an automatic so idk how well a pull start would work
