Shakes going from a dead stop
I read somewhere that there was a product (brace of some kind) that addresses the shakes you get in a 1st gen when getting the car going while in first gear. A slight release of the clutch pedal if done at too low RPM's causes the engine or transmission (not sure which) to shake violently. It seems to do this more when it gets hot. It's kind of like a chatter, but the engine or transmission actually shakes.
Does anyone know what this is, or what I am talking about when I say I heard of a brace of some kind you can buy to fix this? Seems like it was a strut tower brace, but different if you know what I mean. Thanks |
Clutch chatter and heat and a slight slipping of the clutch during engagement usually means there are hot spots burnt into the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. You can install a torque brace and solid engine and tranny mounts, then the entire car can shake instead of just the engine and tranny.
Sounds like it's time for clutch replacement. |
well i dont know about this, but i do know that in mercedes when the spark plugs get clogged with oil from a leak that it vibrates the car violently when stopped or going at a light :D

racing beat makes a engine brace that is supposed to help reduce the shutter. My car has a new clutch/flywheel and it still shakes once in a while.....Racing Beat brace is only 65 dollars or so...Mine is on the way

Me thinks you might inspect your engine mounts.

Sounds like a clutch problem to me. If it tends to "chatter" when releasing the clutch, then look at the clutch first and get that taken care of. Otherwise, you are accomodating the problem rather than fixing it. Besides, if this is the case, a brace would not help you anyway. Good luck..

ChunkeyMonkey;
When you get your RB Engine Brace installed, can you take a Picture of it. I've been wondering what the Brace looks like installed. And of course let us know if it makes any difference. Thanks sgieldon steve |
I hope it makes a difference...My prob. may be different from yours...Mine is a very minor shake(if you even call it that)...I'll let you know.

My car had the same problem, but it happed quite a bit. Sometimes every time I tried to take off it would shutter. I switched to solid engine mounts and it decreased A LOT, but was still there. I never really thought anything of it though. Now that the ol 12A is out with the clutch off the flywheel, I see that the clutch was in pretty good condition, but the flywheel had burn marks on it.

Sounds like it's time for clutch replacement. I have this too.. I know my clutch is well overdue for replacement, I just don't have the money :) I find its best to slowly release clutch around 1500-2000rpm and its ok... but if the clutch is really bad it will slip and probably vibrate. New clutch time. |
my shudders a little from 1st. but a ton from rev. ever since in installed a s/s HD disk and s/s pp w/ light weight flywheel.
was told the tranny torque brace would fix it. carl. |
