to sell or not to sell

ok here is the deal

i have a 79 rx7 s, built 3/78, with 50,964 miles on it. i have had it since 38,6xx miles and i have all recipts to prove actual mileage. since september last year it has been off the road replaced with my daily driver. it is sunbeam silver and the original paint is perfect. being an S it has the steel wheels and the 4 speed manual tranny and no sunroof. the only mods to it are a RB header and presilencer, speakers, tape player and eq.

here is the problem, i love this car to death and it was my first car. in january i am goin to wyotech. i dont want the car to sit down here and not be run for a year, and i also kinda need the money for school.

i got an offer the other day from a 40+ year old recovering alcoholic who is not a rotary enthusiast and just wants to car to cruise around in every now and then. i know this guy and he said that maybe i could buy the car back when i came back from wyoming. he will pay 3k cash for it. that is less than what i payed but i think it is a reasonable price.

what do you guys think would be a reasonable price for this car? and do you think i should give it up to someone who wont fully appreciate what it is?

once again, i love this car and it is a piece of me. what do you guys think?

you would most likely never find another that good agian. I say put it in storage for the year and only sell it if you have to decide between it and food. Student loans are very cheep.

I would go broke and keep it put it in an inside storage or drive it to collage and only sell it if you have to

Don't Sell it. I wish i had my first 7 I regret selling it everyday. Store it. Starve. $3000 is a little low considering the "apparent" condition.

well my current situation is that i live at home till i come back from wyoming and my parents are really wanting me to get rid of it. well mostly my mom, my dad had a 80 rx7 that he bought brand new so he likes it. but we have a 2 car garage and 4 cars outside the garage. i might be able to leave it but wouldnt the engine seize up or something? i couldnt rely on anyone in my family to start it up on a regular basis. would it sitting for a year hurt anything?
and RRTEC, what do you mean apparent condition? i am not trying to sell it here i am just asking questions, i have no reason to lie about the condition. i am not trying to sound like a dick either, sorry if i sound like a defensive A-hole :)

would your dad drive the 7 every now and then ? and what about puting a little atf or oil down the intake wile you stored it ? its just a thought.

Joel i didn't mean to offend you I just havent seen the car so i don't know what condition it is in..I have looked at "mint" cars and they have rust in the wheel wells, ghetto wiring, cracked dashes ect....I'm sure your car is really nice. With 60k how could it not be. I still say keep it and i don't think you are lying.

Do what you need to do to survive. Not starting up the car may seize up the motor. That happend to me. I didn't drive my gslse for 3 months due to no insurance, one of the rotors siezed up on me and I was pissed. Just have someone start it up each week.

Peace-

f@$k it...ill live in the car!

I wouldn't sell it. At 25 yrs age and in good shape it'll get more valuable. Don't sell it to that guy.

I parked my 83 for a couple years in the carport: no problem. We did change the fluids before restarting. With 120k it's still the best running of my 3 7s.

I have another 83 that I run every couple weeks just to keep it OK. Seems to work.

Use about 12-16 oz. of MMO in every tankful and that'll help. There are also some "Fogging oil" you can get at the auto store. Sounds like a good idea, tho I've never done it.

Put a cover over the car to protect it from moisture (mostly condensation which gets under just the hood).

See if your dad or a friend will start it every 3-4 weeks. May need to shoot a spray of gas in the carb to prime it.

Keep the car.

Definately keep the car. SA's are dissapearing rapidly and you will have a car that is quite rare if you hold on for a few more years. Then if you have to sell, you'll get more for it than you will now. It seems that prices for RX-7s have bottomed out and are beginning to rebound some, IMHO.

If you can at all swing it, don't sell! One of the biggest "car" mistakes I ever made was when I sold my 76 Cosmo, it's a mistake a regret to this day.

I wouldn't worry too much about the engine seizng. For a little insurance, you can pickle the engine with a little MMO before you park it. If your Dad likes the car perhaps you can persuade him to hand crank the engine every now and then. Just leave a rachet wrench on the alternator and all he'll hafta do is give it a twist every now and then.

If you need to sell it so badly, at least sell it to a rotary enthusiast who will really take good care of it (wishes he lived in Texas...)

joelwahid 10-09-03 12:55 PM

thanks for your opinions guys, it is a tough decision and i know i will regret selling it (especially if i get a call saying the car is totalled). well i got a few more months to decide.
if i were to keep it what all should i do to keep it in sound mechanical condition? put it on jack stands, put mmo or something in the engine and have someone turn it every now and then, i have stabilizer in the tank. does stabilizer go bad? and would the oil go bad? does the engine have to be warm to take the oil drain plug out? anything else i should know?

thanks guys i appreciate your input.
