Second gen plugs in 12a?

Cross reference at auto zone and says they will work? Ngk 2526

j9fd3s 03-23-14 04:45 PM

its not ideal, but they will work.

the Rx8 plugs are actually the best choice, followed by the stock plugs, or the colder GSL-SE plugs

black82gsl 03-23-14 05:41 PM

Ok. Well they didn't have anything in stock but the 2526's
I've read with the single electrode plugs gapped out makes a better spark withy dfi system.

j9fd3s 03-23-14 06:02 PM

yep, the Rx8 plugs are a fine wire electrode, which makes them better.

the FC are surface discharge, with a big gap, so they take more power to fire, and this is a problem with the stock ignition, which is power limited

I put them in and then took trailing out so I could crank the engine over by hand to be sure the didn't stick out to far and hit the apart seal. I don't know if that's possible? But didn't want to risk it. Seemed good so I ran it and they seem fine. I don't really know if there is any real power difference between plugs?

there can be, the more stock the engine is the less it matters

t_g_farrell 03-24-14 01:48 PM

Yeah, I was going to say the rx8 plugs are $$$ but they are better and supposedly last longer. I
run them in my 7 now.

Dave.Martin2008 03-24-14 02:21 PM

so do you guys run the NGK 6700 for the leading and the NGK 6701 for trailing or just all for of one kind?

black82gsl 03-24-14 03:01 PM

Ok so rx8 plugs are better. What is going to make the best spark? I have a dfi system.
Msd 6a
1 50000volt accel super coil per leading plug.
So I can't imagine anything much more powerful?

t_g_farrell 03-24-14 03:22 PM

I only run plugs in the leading, no trailing ignition.

black82gsl 03-24-14 07:35 PM

Why is that? I'm assuming that trailing can't hurt performance at all?

Dave.Martin2008 03-24-14 08:04 PM

Yeah how are you running off just to bottom ones. I have my leading DFI from stock coils and I couldn't get mine to stat with the top plugs unhooked.

black82gsl 03-25-14 07:12 AM

Mine will run without trailing but why take them off?

Dave.Martin2008 03-25-14 07:24 AM

I have read that taking the trailing wires and moving them to the leading spots in the cap helps also but I want a more direct answer on that before I attempt to do it. Just don't want to mess up my engine.

Jeff20B 03-25-14 09:49 AM

The direct answer is there is one less gap to jump.

The longer answer is take off the cap and rotor. Study the design of both. Flip them over and turn the rotor inside the cap. Imagine how/where the spark has to go to do its job. Compare trailing with leading. Have a light bulb turn on over your head when you understand the leading side is better and just sitting there open and waiting for you to move the trailing wires over to it as a side benefit to going direct fire on leading. Kick back and enjoy whatever adult beverage you desire after completing a direct fire upgrade.

black82gsl 03-25-14 10:53 AM

So what you're trying to say is to plug my trailing coil into the leading position on dizzy and run my trailing plugs of L1 and L2?

Dave.Martin2008 03-25-14 11:00 AM

Yes. And Jeff I looked under the cap and get it now. By moving the trailing plugs to the leading position they will both fire at the same time instead of every other time in the trailing position. So yes light bulb turned on above my head once I looked under the cap. For some reason I was thinking that if moving them to another position it would eliminate the spark but the pickup underneath the cover has 4 points and passes by the same as the leading. You are just making the trailing plugs fire both at the same time instead of alternating. I get it now. Thanks.

Jeff20B 03-25-14 11:27 AM

No you're still wrong. You can't fire both trailings at the same time because the engine will try to run but won't be able to correctly. You can only fire both leadings at the same time which is what direct fire accomplishes if you do so called "waste spark". Of course the spark is not actually wasted on a rotary as it actually does something compared to where the term originated (on piston engines).

So take another look at the cap and rotor and understand it's the same for both. Meaning it fires each plug only once per revolution. There is just one less gap to jump on the leading circuit, making it the better choice since you have the option. Or just leave them in the trailing position and understand that it's the lesser of two choices. Of course you won't notice a power increase regardless because trailing doesn't do anythng for power. But you'll have the peace of mind of knowing the leading side is better.

the standard iridiums are a bit cheaper than the laser iridium RX8 plugs, and yet still cheaper than even the FC/FD plugs.
