seats for 84 - want to sit lower

I have an 84 gsl and an 82 gx. I've ported the 12a, got two webber carbs a header and exhaust, shocks and wheel/tire package. I got momo shifter and steering wheel and here's the prob. I can't see much of the dash because the steering wheel is smaller (and so much faster in reponse) than the stock. So I want to sit lower to be able to see. Are there racing seats that would do this or should I have the seat recovered so that there's less padding - would that work. And I also find that the headrest doesn't support my head - the angle of the back needs to be far enough that my average legs reach the pedals but I'm not jammed up against the wheel. So my head bobs back when I accelerate because there's no support and I can only see the tach when it goes up around 8 grand. I would welcome any suggestions.

I'm looking into Recarro Racing seats for my '84. I don't know if they are much lower, but I know they are much more comfortable and they have an optionaly 5 point system.

Well, you could grind off where the seat brackets attach to the floor board and weld a plate back into the whole and re mount the seats by going under the car and drilling a whole for the bolt or just weld the brackets back into place.

Cheers,
Brad

My 83 GS sits low enough already, but the 85GSl sits high, so I got a primo leather seat from the JY (for about $25) and I'm going to invert it and pry the undersprings down.

Ths GSL Seats are a little higher because of the tilt feature. You might want to try some "regular" seats.

Most aftermarket seats are actually HIGHER.

I do know that FD seats and Miata seats fit LOWER in the FB though.

Lower seats

thanks for the help. Was afraid aftermarket might be higher - you can't really compare when sitting in them in a store. But taking out the bracket and welding to the floor sounds like a plan. Thanks

I'm looking to get some kind of racing seat that I can put a 4-point harness on. The bolstering on my stock '83 GSL seats is floppy and worthless. I'd rather not spend a lot of money on a Sparco or something. I looked at Summit Racing, and they make a good looking seat for $200. Does anybody have any suggestions?

keep in mind that on the passenger side, inner seat rail sit up way higher than any of the others due to the hump in the floor. i just found out about this, and it looks like it would be hard to make a rail on that side, plus it would be near impossible to have the seat sit as low as the driver's side could...

if anyone has worked on that subject and wants to share, please do!!

rusty....im looking into getting a seat called a "momo start". and its around $275...its a real hardcore racing seat with huge support....im probably gunna leave the passenger side stock and just get one racing seat for drier....not sure yet

the ebay seats look ok if you wanna go that route, just don't get the common cloth 'apc' ones unless you wanna look like every other ricer out there...the mazdaspeed ones look ok in my opinion...and they're dirt cheap

Oh don't worry, I'd sooner burn my car than let an APC product touch it. I'm also gonna leave the passenger seat stock. They're not the ones doing the driving anyway :p:

This is the seat from Summit that I'm looking at

This is a seat bracket from Summit. I'm not sure what it fits, though I assume it works with the Summit racing seat.

have you seen the seats on ebay exactly the same as that one? i believe they are "k2", or something...but with the mazdaspeed logo stitched in the headrest. im sure they are the same seats. on ebay, they're $89 plus $150 ship for 2. that's cheap. im thinking about these

RustyRotary 06-27-05 08:29 PM

I just looked at them. They're the same "Torino" style, but it's a different seat. I personally would trust a Summit seat more, plus they have seat brackets available.

"Carbon fiber cloth"? I don't know about that lol
