SE no start flooding

Bought this car 85 SE started right up, drove less than a block away, got gas, turned over started went to about 3K then died, now she wont start. Terrible gas fumes all around. Removed spark plugs, soaked in fuel. Turned her over nice shpoosh sounds so compression not an issue (nice gas cloud). Bought new plugs, still wont start. Need serious help on this one, checked the forums not finding what I need. Help help help

One thing you should avoid doing with a GSL-SE is starting it up, driving one block, and shutting it off. Doing that can cause flooding problems, with a difficult re-start. You should always drive the car a few blocks at least, to get it warmed up a bit, before shutting it off.

Have you tried the SE flooding/re-start procedure?.. this procedure asks a lot from the battery, so be sure it has lots of juice. Just hold the gas pedal to the floor (do not let up!!) while continuously cranking the engine.

You will need a good battery, but this procedure works. I've had to use it more than once. :)

I will pull the Optima red top from my 81 and hit it in the morning. I had let it warm up (1/4 up on the temp gauge) obviously not enough. Did you get away with the 3 step or did you have to do the complex?

thanks, by the way

Steve, here's what you have to do:

you try to crank it, it just floods.

on the front ignition coil (toward the nose of the car) there is this blue plug. Unplug it.

get in the car, floor it, and turn the key. do this for 15-20 seconds or until it starts. it will die automatically, or just turn it off, doesnt matter.

plug the blue thing back in.

Start your car WITHOUT TOUCHING the gas. put it in true neutral and just turn the key

This works every time for me.

Here is the best way to start the ever flooding GSL=SE

REMOVE THE FUSE FOR THE INJECTORS AND CRANK FOR ~FIVE SECONDS WITH THE GAS PEDAL DEPRESSED, WHILE STILL CRANKING REPLACE THE FUSE AND RELEASE THE GAS PEDAL,

This worked for me everytime, you just might have to catch the engine when it starts so it dosen't die again. A Rx-7 Guru friend of mine said to wire a switch to the injector circuit.

Thanks everyone. Cant wait to get this beast on the road. The little I did drive it I could tell a substantail difference than my 12a. Thanks ioTus, maybe we'll run into each other some day if your ever in the Sea/Tac area.

Steve, if all else fails you can always tow it to start. As info, it will smoke like a mofo! http://dragonneo.com/Malathar/animgifs/drgnsmk16.gif

good luck!

Got her started, had to turn over 20 sec, put in ATF, started right up. Drove for an hour, come home, turned off still flooding. Time to figure out this problem. Overall the car is solid. Just picked her up yesterday for $400. Has some front end damage but other than that all is good, and of course the flooding issue. Thanks for all the help.
