SE accelerating better at part-throttle?

My '85 GSLSE is accelerating better at part-throttle than it is at full-throttle.

When the pedal is pushed to the floor, the rpm's almost stall and are slow to climb. At full throttle the car does make more sound, though it seems like a hollow sound. At part throttle the rpm's move upward like you would expect at that specific throttle angle.

I imagine something is not right, but I have no idea why the car is running like this. Any ideas?

Tps???

I'm trying to figure this out. How would the TPS cause or be part of the problem I am describing?

Thanks,

Mike

Start with the intake piping, check that it is secure and not leaking. Then check the throttle plates and linkage are working properly. TPS may be a possibility, but it sounds like it may be more mechanical, than electrical with your brief description.

wassa matter?

Well I like to guess/trouble shoot, so TPS came to mind based on the brief description. The attached trouble shooting list gives several possibilities.

Starting form the bottom of the page, I presumed that it would not likely be items like the compression, control unit, water thermo sensor, vacuum switch, injector, aux port valve, air cleaner.

That leaves throttle sensor (TPS), fuel pressure, double throttle, air flow meter and air temp sensor.

Since it does accelerate good under some conditions, I would think the fuel pressure is ok and the double throttle is ok.

SO that leaves the TPS and air temp sensor. And since it appears to be related to the position of the pedal on the floor, I guessed TPS.

I should get a real job.

Thanks guys, it looks like I have some work ahead of me.

Good morning Captain. I'm not sure I understand how good part-throttle response would eliminate a fuel pressure issue. I'll admit that I'm not very familiar with the SEs, but it doesn't sound right to me. The sound and power fall off that he is describing are identical to a restricted jet issue I had with my Nikki carb. Power was great up to a point, that was when my need for fuel began to surpass the amount that could squeeze through the blockage and make it through the jets. So, based on that I'm going to take a shot in the dark and suggest; rust in the tank, clogged filter, clogged injector(s), MAF adjustment, TPS adjustment, or a major leak in the intake piping. Like I said, I don't have much experience with these systems but this is what sounds right to me.... Good luck! :)

My SE's acceleration is not much different between 3/4 and full throttle. I don't know if that's the norm or just too much restriction with the air intake system. I need to check to make sure the accel cable is opening the t/body all the way..

The car gets driven a short distance roughly two days out of the week. Before this problem started, for the first time it had much trouble turning over. It took about three minutes of cranking and pushing the accelerator pedal (I know this is not a carb, but it helped kick it over). When it started there was a huge cloud of white smoke for some time, then it finally stopped. The car ran fine after this incident. A couple days later is when the problem started.
