SA vs FB MCs

I own a 1980 SA that has failing clutch and brake master cylinders.
While shopping around I'm noticing that 79 - 80 are different than 81 - 85.
More notably, the 79-80's are either unavailable or much more expensive than the FB equivalent part.

Can somebody shed some light on this? My car has rear drum brakes and calipers that DO NOT look like the ones from 79s (so I have the newer type?)

Can I just go ahead and order the FB equivalents of these parts? (and as for brake pads should I shop as if I have an 81 as well?)

Cheers,
Kam

mazdatrix has both for the same price....

the SA has a bunch of differences. the biggie being that the brake lines are a different thread. i think the bolt pattern to the brake booster is different also.

Rear drum brakes on the 79 are manual adjustment only, no auto adjusters. I think this is the biggest difference from the later FB's, but I am unsure what setup with 80's came with. Also, you can't just go by the drum itself for reference since the drum can differ between manufacturers of replacement parts.

Interesting... Must be why my mutant car has brake booster issues...

I got the car from an idiot that put a 13B in there and has swaped out numerous parts along the way. On the PO's behalf most of the work was done properly.

Bummer.

Thanks all for your replies, I guess going FB sounds like a recipe for disaster...

85rotarypower, I notice you're also from Ontario, where do you get all your parts from?

Cheers.

Slightly off topic if you end up needing to change the clutch master cylinder there is difference between the 79 and the 80 clutch master. FYI there are actually a lot of tiny quirks that differentiate the 79 to 80 SA's as well as the differences between the FB's.
