SA troubles part II

Ok so the SA was running earlier. We hooked up the fuel tank took it off the jack and went to go for a spin! The car was just out of the shop then it died. Before we moved it, it was running smooth and idling good. We checked for spark, two plugs were good and two were not as good , Eric suggested taking the plugs from his FB, all of which had good spark so we put those in. When we tried to start it to get into the shop. We turned it over and it started up OK, not like it did 50 feet ago, purring like a big cat. Then it just starts backfiring to where the car sounded more like an M60 then a Rx7, and it has zero power. We pulled into the shop and the exhaust was glowing red, I read on this Rx7 forum it might be running too rich or timing may be off. Also the car has little power and flooring it only brings it from 4 to 6k rpm.

So the questions: If it is running too rich, how do I adjust that? It's got to be more then the MAS.

If it's not running rich, what would cause it to act like it was?

The timing couldn't really be retarded after 50 feet.... could it?

As always any help would be awesome!

Leks

Do you still have all of the emissions on the carb including the air pump?

Yeah, the emissions is still on there (what there is of it on the 79) and the rest of the car is bone stock.

so you think exhaust leak? really? I know the mufflers pretty bad, but it has been and the car ran fine before.

You say your plug chops look ok. So I'd through out a gumed up carb (even though you were just working on the fuel system)

If you have an exhaust leak that air pump will lean out your exhaust (like its suposed to do) and make a hella racket.
