SA Rat Nest Removal Question?
 
I have my racing beat exhaust (header and presilencer) on their way and I’m trying to understand this walkthrough from MosesX605, but there are no pictures to go off of. Also I’m going to replace the cab hat with a racing beat one. It’s a stock 12a and all of this is going to be done at once.

Going off this picture, is my understanding correct, the line from the fuel tank, and the two lines from the oil filler neck will run into a PCV valve which goes to the charcoal canister but I’m not going to have one with the racing beat carb hat. Do I just cap them off? Also with having a header and RB carb hat would I just cap everything from the rats nest off and just run a new line for vacuum advance? Sorry guys if this has been disused before but I’m just not finding it.

SA header install
 
The first thing you are going to need is an FB intake so you can block the EGR port on your engine when you install the RB header. You will need the block off plates for the intake manifold which you can buy from RB #16326, 16320, or may be able to make your own. You can remove all the rat's nest hoses and plug everything, you may wish to use of the ports off the carb spacer for vacuum advance. The RB air cleaner assembly comes with provision for crank case ventilation line, you may have to simply buy some vacuum line the appropriate size from somewhere like NAPA. You can visit Sterling's site for a good write up how to remove the emission related controls from your Nikki carb and you might as well remove the choke plate, trim the booster venturis and go mechanical secondaries while you are at it. Or just order a Sterling from Dennis. Good luck!

An FB intake? I thought the EGR was only for California emissions? I have the block of plates for the Intake manifold and heat exchange. I also have A/C and would like to keep it... I think the a/c has a vacuum hose that will need to run to the throttle opener? not sure? But I thought you have to provide proper ventilation for the oil pan and fuel tank? I'm wondering what to run since I won’t have a charcoal canister… the PCV to carb vent?

I’ll check out Sterlings web site when I get home. It’s blocked at work.

The required blockoff plates should come with the header (mine did).

I have two vacuume lines: one from carb base to oil neck, and one to the vac advance. I did not use a PCV valve, and haven't had any issues with "lung mustard", so you might want to try that first (you can always add one later if needed).

As far as the SA / FB intake. When you remove your exhaust manifold "thermal reactor" you will find a rectangular port below the center of the intake manifold. It is my understanding the SA did the EGR thru the thermal reactor housing, the FB's did EGR thru the intake. So you will need an FB intake and gasket to cover this EGR port. That's what I'm finding on my SA.

My s1 is set up very simple, maybe this helps:

-Hose from air filter/charcoal can into crankcase (nipple next to the oil filler neck one)
-Hose from oil filler neck + hose from fuel tank vent -> T-piece into hose which runs into carb (has vacuum).

From what I understand air is sucked into the crankcase via the charcoal can then out through the filler neck (as fumes) and into the carb along with fuel fumes. If yer getting rid of the charcoal can in the bluey lid just run that hose into the crankcase nipple on the RB intake housing (never seen one of these but it says on the site that they have something for crankcase ventilation on that housing). Should be an easy fix.

Oneiros, Thanks! That helps out a lot, seeing how simple you made if I feel stupid asking the question. I’m guessing you didn’t use any PCV valve either for the crankcase? I hould be all set... Thanks Again.

Haha no worries, don't worry man it took me ages to figure out what the heck was going on. I've heard something about there possibly being a PCV valve in the intake manifold on S1's but haven't had a look inside yet so I dunno. This is how it was setup when I bought it, so I guess it's alright.
