As i understand it 1st gen have two spindle types:
Small outer bearing and large outer bearing
My questions are;

Are the spacing between the inner and outer bearings the same?

Can i fit the large bearing hub onto a small bearing spindle using either

A; a different outer bearing that suits both the hub and spindle

B;the small spindle bearing with a sleeve machined to suit the hub

C; a sleeve fitted to the spindle to suit the large bearing in the hub

And the large bearing hub 4x4.5 pcd also has a higher offest, would this be retained if i fitted the big hubs onto the small spindle?

spindle and rotor must match for the most part. There are 2 styles for 1st gens; 78-83 small bearing, and 84-85 large bearing. If one desires to use the large bearing set up, then one must have larger bearing spindles

I am aware they are different, that isnt what i asked....

I need to know can the larger be adapted to the smaller in the same way fc hubs are often retro fitted onto sa fb and even rx3 rx4 spindles

You might want to post in the racing section or the old school section as well.

I've only ever read of folks doing the spindle and hub swap together.

Is there a reason you have to keep the small spindle?

there is always a way to adapt one thing to another. But in my opinion by the time you adapt this and do that, it might be too costly. That is why people just buy the bigger spindles as a complete unit......less pain, less money and better all around.....

And will straight bolt-on to a RX-3 & 4 LCA. I stilll dont see the point of upgrading to FC calipers when the above and FB brake booster/rear brake upgrade works very well on my RX-3s

the main reason is availibilty...the big bearing uprights are virtualy impossible to get in NZ and super expensive (us $600 + ) i can source brand new hubs for us$100 pair,and about another $100 for bearing spacers to be machined. i wont be using fb calipers as the car already has fd front brakes and fc rear.

It's the opposite here... S1 struts are just about impossible to find because they get scrapped, S2 are hard to find because they get used until they're bent and then scrapped, S3 are easiest to find because even after they bend people don't scrap them.

because of the weight and size its too costly to get some shipped over.

If the bearing spacing is the same i think i can sleeve the big hub to take the small bearing easily enough, BUT im reluctant to start spending $ untill im sure........

If it's any help, they make sleeves to put FC hubs on S3 spindles. If Mazda kept the same bearing spacing there, then S1-2 is probably the same as well.

I am unaware of any adaptor bearings that exist.

Could it be possible to use struts from a different car? I'm not sure how easy it is to find 240Z struts around where you are.
