SA dash vs FB dash

i only just realised how much of a difference there is in the dash between the SA and the FB, i own 2 SAs and personally i love the dash in them far more than the FB. it seems so much smoother and sexier.

tell me what you reckon. pics are welcome.

Siraniko 03-11-06 12:18 AM

The dash is the same on 79-83, except the 79 has speaker holes above the glove compartment. In 1986, I upgrade my SA's dash to 83. Nice but got lots of cuts.

blwfly 03-11-06 12:32 AM

i have a 83 and i think my dash is 100 times better than the 85 fugley lookin one

gsterror 03-11-06 12:39 AM

I like the S1/S2 dash way more than the S3 dash.

shepski 03-11-06 12:50 AM

oh ok so the 83+ dash is the one with the squarish guage pod etc.

blwfly 03-11-06 01:15 AM

hmm my cars 83 but i have the 82 dash not squish unlessed my titles incorect

shepski. I notice you live in Australia where the late Gen 1s did not get the updated dash of the US model. Which of the three styles of dash are you talking about ?

Nicholas P. 03-11-06 05:08 AM

their all sexy 7's and dont ya forget it LOL :P

Mazdax605 03-11-06 05:55 AM

I like the pre 84-85 dash boards. It was one of the reasons why I looked at specifically at 83,and older cars to replace my 83 Limited edition. The 84-85 dash was an attempt at making the cars look more modern I think, but it failed at it.The pre 84-85 dash has a more classic simple design to it that to me is timeless.

Hell yeah, that's what I'm talking about! :D That's my interior and I love it. I've seen the older interiors, not bad, but I'm so used to mine that well.........I love it most. ;)

The first of your three posts: I like the last two. Nice and clean. That first one? *L* Batman logo? Wow..........

Wankelguy 03-11-06 12:29 PM

Ugh, way to gay up what should be a rather spartan little sportscar interior.

Tranquil 03-11-06 02:55 PM

Wow, if I had the money I could make a first gen interior a million times better, and functional.

That's what I'm saying as well.

Anyway, I preferred my '83 interior much more than my '84 interior, but my '83 interior was ruined. Completely, so I had to get rid of it. The plastic was dry rotted, and touching it would put red chips in your hair for a week.

My '84 on the other hand had near perfect interior, with the exception of the back carpet not being there. I would still absolutely love to get my hands on a full '83 interior and replace the lack of interior in my '83.

Well if you are looking for a maroon 83 interior,I have what you are looking for.I am parting out my 83 Limited edition right now.The rear carpet is spoken for already, but I do have another one that is in good shape. The only problem really is the carpet stuff that drapes down to cover the tailights is ripped, rotted, and nasty.PM me if you are interested in anything.Come to think of it,I think I have an entire 83 LE interior short of the dash that I removed from a parts LE a few years ago.

I agree, the Gen1 should be a spartan sports car. My view is it should look masculine rather than a colorful 'sexy' machine. The stock interior is great apart from the period of mock tartan upholstery.

As for gauges, the oil pressure and water temperature are the only ones I have time to look at when driving a RX-7 as it should be driven. Even the rev counter is only secondary if you know your engine.

rbf41182gt- where did you get that shift knob, I like that.

I like the SA interior over the FB's...

Heres my SA in progress....
the shifter and radio surround will soon be painted silver and the rest will be completed. power windows and locks soon too hopefully with black and grey gslse door panels... have the 3" straight through "muffler" the t3 .60 .48 turbo, and the stock clutch disc in the floor board...

Nicholas P. 03-11-06 06:56 PM

i dont like the 83and back... its too 70's

rbf41182gt 03-11-06 07:31 PM

i don't like the 81-85- too 80's

i made the rotor insert, but bought the rest of teh shift knob. It came with a fake carbon fiber thing, but that wasn't workin for me

GavinJuice 03-11-06 07:41 PM

the last picture of ChasRX's first post is amazing. everything just flows

I support the view. The best Gen 1 was the 85 SA, it came without the complex FB dash. It also had all disc brakes, lsd, and 114 wheel lug spacing.

Well, I personally like the earlier FB style better, but that picture seems to be my EXACT old '85, even though I bet it's not from Topeka, Ks.... but even the swivel-out tray under the stereo was messed up in the same place.... makes me miss her...
but it's okay, I got the '83 GSL now with some upgrades!

This looks like the dash from all the NZ, UK and Australian RX-7s, even the 85 SA after they put decent stereo speakers into it.

How was the FB different? Or are talking about the Instrument Panel or Centre Consule?

Pele 03-12-06 12:37 AM

I don't like the HVAC controls in either. I like the FC's setup much better. Got knobs, sliders, and buttons abound in the FB... Pick ONE style of control, not many.

Besides, the locations for the heat/cold and the fan speed knob are perfect for gauges...

I despise the fake leather grain and stitching all over the place...

I like the S2 gauge cluster better. I hate the S1/S2 round vents...

Still debating on the dash styles, leaning more towards the S3.

Hey Phill, my white 84 GSL with the red interior is from Wichita, not Topeka, but not a bad guess. Here's a photo from the rear, I think you can make out the dealer's insignia, which is Wichita Mazda Ltd.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...57_90_full.jpg

Here's a picture of the interior before I swapped out the velour seats for red leather, which I like a bit more:

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...57_96_full.jpg

I got the car last year with 84,000 miles on it, needed some repairs but it's in rare unmolested stock condition and the body is near perfect, something worth investing in. It's my daily driver now and it's a real pleasure to drive.

As you might also have guessed, I'm a fan of the stock look and that 84-85 dash layout is a classic, one of the defining features of the first gen (along with the pop up headlights, X wheels, wrap around taillights and pointy nose). I like the earlier dashes too, especially when they keep the original lay out.

In my opinion the fading and signs of wear just add to the classic, elegant look of these one-of-a-kind cars - why change it, no matter what year your 7 is? They must have been built well too, all the electronics, controls and sound systems have worked perfectly on all three of my GSLs, not something you see very often in twenty year cars.

Let's see some pictures of the earlier stock dash layouts!
