SA - Cabin heater / vent control adjustments

I'm re-assembling a '79 rx7 after painting. The vent adjustment lever has not worked properly for a number of years. Seeing it apart now it's obvious why. The outer portion of the cables have popped loose from under the clamps. As the lever is moved back and forth, the entire cable and sheath just wiggle about, not moving the ducting at all.

As I go to reassemble the dash, I want to ensure these adjustment levers are set up properly, but see nothing mentioned in the FSM. Does anyone have further info? I'm sure with a bit of fiddling I can get it set up correctly, but if there's some published data, that would make the job much easier.

FWIW I believe its how the outer cable is CLAMPED, esp at the forward/control slider end (front). The platform the controls are bolted to should include metal clamps that guide/hold the cables in place. If you disconnected the cables at the heater box, and just removed the whole cable/slider assembly as one unit, then there should be no problem. Obviously, the fact you HAVE a problem sez otherwise :(

I assume the controlled ducts are functioning correctly? ie not sticking and thus not permitting the cable to operate it correctly?

I pulled apart a 79 Limited wreck and photo documented the control cable hook ups. I can try to find these....

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hi Stu,

Thanks for the reply. I ended up lubricating and reassembling everything last night. With some fiddling with cable clamp position, I was able to get the various flapper doors to move to their fully closed positions at the appropriate time. On with the rest of the assembly!

Stu,

Here's a pic of the shell. The car's in a 1000 pieces still, but we're making progress.
