sa alternator

My external regulator for the alternator on my 79 has burned out, so I want to replace the alternator with an internally regulated one. I have searched and looked at the posts in the 1st gen archives, and find them to be a little confusing. It might be easier if my rx was here so that I can actually have a look at the alternator and harness. Does anyone have a simpler how to with pictures that I can follow.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum .I don't know if the SA is the same as a FB plugin in the back of the alternator, but I got a 83 GSL and I have a S4(2nd gen) alternator on mine which puts out 20 more amps than the stock one. Its 70 amps and is straight plug in with the FB cars, I don't know about the SA, but would only take a little work to make it work if it doesn't fit right in. If you don't know all about the SA, FB, FC, FD, S1, S2,, S3, S4, etc., then check out the faq page for that info. Even if you know all that little tiny bit of info still check out all the faqs, archives, and the search button. These will help you out and us too all the time. Help answer some of the questions you might have.

God bless

The threads in the archive are the best you are going to get, One has a pic that shows it well.

i have a s3 alternator for sale if you want, it works fine, my guess is that sa and fb would have the same plugs, but if not i dont think it would be to hard to figure out how to hook it up.

sa7, welcome to the forum and the Darkside. In my sig line a link to the online FSMs, carb manuals, wiring diagrams, etc.. If you compare the 79 wiring diagram with any of the 81 or later ones, it will give you an idea of what needs to be changed for the internally regulated alt.

Any alt fom 81 to 88 is a direct install, with the provisions made for the internal conversions. You can also install the higher amp S5 and 3rd gen alts with different wiring changes. All of which are in the archives.

Thanks, the wiring diagram should help out alot.
