RX8-esque overrev buzzer?
 
This is definitely out there on the things-I-wish-to-do-to-my-car list.

I've never really been a fan of the stock buzzer, so riddle me this: can I fit a Radioshack special to the soldier points of the original buzzer and get that nice, smooth, high frequency goodness of the RX-8 buzzer?

it would still work just would need air lines, compressor, fitting fast solenoid and tada your deaf everytime you take it up to 6800 rpms lol:lol:

There is a buzzer for you, my friend. It's the one I chose to purchase ( Tried them in the store first ) and my friend installed one as well. It is very similar to the RX-8 over-rev buzzer but it's a bit more...ear piercing? I don't have the item number, but it's a small, round, black buzzer...about the size of a quarter.

Here's an installation tip:

Take some speaker wire and route it from out behind the gauge cluster up by your ear. You'll never not hear the sound of it even if you've got some crazy ass exhaust system.

Yeah, the added weight would help to insure it didn't see frequent use......

Wouldn't the shock make your muscles push down on the peddle more? Or would it make your leg spring back up? The tazer may be an overrev and engine blower in one. :)

I guess if nothing else it'll make you scream like a 12 year old girl and that can take the place of the over rev buzzer. :)

Sounds almost like an old-school Ferrari horn.

A really long time ago in a old VW mag I had there was an article about something called an "elephant tach", it was somethign like 10in in dia and it would shock the hell out of you if you missed a shift. I remember it was sitting on its own stand beside the drivers seat and it looks totally ridiculous. It then had an electrical lead that was on your right arm.

It's one of the things that makes it what it is. This is like messing with the pop up's etc. Just enjoy that sound of the 80's time machine.

Ah, nevermind. Figured it out by that over-rev adjustment article.

For those of you who want to modernize the car, it's really simple. This is directed for the '84 and '85.

Go get yourself a 273-060 piezo from RadioShack (at time of purchase it was just under $5), some thin speaker wire, a wire stripper (optional) and eyelets (optional).

Take out your cluster. On the back, directly behind the tach, and there should be four screws at the top of the tach, with two in the middle of it. Get four pieces of tape but cut no more than 2 or 3mm in width and about 10mm in length. Take out the very right screw on the set of four.

Take the strips of tape and fold them in half and put them into the hole. Fold those over the copper circle around the hole for the screw. One in each cardinal direction (top, left, right and bottom). What you are doing here is making sure the screw won't make contact with the sides of the hole, as it's exposed copper so it may shift around and make contact. Get a small square just enough to cover the copper part where the screw goes and put it on top of those and press everything smooth. Get the screw you took out and press down into the hole and screw everything together. Leave that screw out slightly so you can cram the wire between the tape and the screw if you don't have any eyelets that size. This is your ground.

Back out the screw to the left of the screw you just determined that is your ground. That's your ignition switched 12v.

Get your speaker wire and tin and soldier the piezo to the wire. Fold both wires about 90 degrees (make sure they are stripped to about 5mm) and put the negative wire under the ground screw (the one you taped up) and the other wire in the to the left of the ground (the switched 12v).

If it makes it easier for you, the 12v is clearly marked just below the screw as IGN I believe and the ground is marked further down the circuit.

Screw everything down. Reinstall cluster, place piezo in the spot you want and enjoy.

The reason for the speaker wire is so that if you don't like the stock location because it's too quiet, you can re-locate the piezo. I put mine under the shifter so the piezo can breath and do it's thing, yet stay stealthy.

It may not be the exact RX8 rev-limit note, as it seems just a little bit higher, but it's damn close.

I got sick of people asking why my car honks when I get into red-line. To each his own, right? :D
