RX in a crate?
 

OK, I am officially an RX-7 owner by the strictest definition, i.e. I just bought a second FB for parts!

Mechanically, the second FB is in good shape but the body is shot. It is way beyond repair. I want to strip off anything I can (hood, front panels, interior, engine, tranny, etc) and send what’s left of the body to the crusher :Kill1: . Eventually, I want to replace the automatic transmission in mine with this standard tranny. Of course there will be a new influx of spare parts up for grabs when I am done.

So the question is, what is the best way to store the engine and transmission for future use? For the engine, I figure I should put a little oil in the chambers and seal off the carb and exhaust with plastic wrap. Then I’m going to spray the outside with that marine grease they use to winterize boat engines. Is there anything else I need to do?

How about the transmission? Any tips on how to store that.

for the engine, put some of that marvel mistery oil in it. remove the exhaust manifold and put some duct tape over the ports. instead of removing the intake, just take off the carb and put tape on that surface of the intake. and also, leave the plugs in it.

as for the tranny, i just stand them up on the bellhousing with a couple pieces of wood so it doesn't sit on the end of the input shaft and put a cap off an empty paint can on the tailhousing, or tape, or a plastic bag and tape, etc.

I just finished rebuilding a 351 Windsor that came out of a'71 Torino. It had been sitting in my cousins garage for about 20 years. He had poured it full of burnt motor oil. All I found wrong was one stuck valve-- the bottom end was in great shape, and I left it completely original. I would think that any type of oil that you can circulate and coat all the internals with would protect it.
