Rx-7 a sedan?

I just opened my pioneer product catalog. I'm looking at thier screen for the DSP cabin EQ and I see an RX-7 under the sedan option. Cool to see a RX-7 in there but kinda funny to know I'm driving a sedan.

I don't have a scanner so I'm sorry can't share the disapointment with you.

The RX-7 is a sedan. The meaning of sedan is a vehicle with only one compartment for the passenger. The RX-7 used to race as a sedan in the UK and win many championships, until the rules for the class were changed to only four door cars could compete. Historically, the first sedans were two person power, a box for one passenger carried on poles by two servants.

One version of the sedan is a coupe, a passenger compartment for two passengers originally with the driver outside. The term coupe was first used to describe a car in 1912. Most of the early coupes were open, later came the hardtop. This is an accurate description for a RX-7, but sedan is correct.

The definition of sportscar is vague, and relates primarily to its use or image. The meaning of sport is to amuse, recreate oneself, take pleasure. If your RX-7 is fun to drive or you amuse yourself by continually rebuilding the engine, its a sportscar!

It is my understanding that a sedan is a four door car, while a coupe is a two door car. So what do you call a three door car (with the hatch included)?

hatchback...?

In some roadracing organizations, (SCCA, ICSCC..) the 1st gen Rx-7 is legal for "Radial Sedan" because a very few models were produced with tiny little rear seats in place of the bins behind the seats. The term sedan is usually used to describe a four seat or four passenger vehicle, while a "sports car" is typically a two seat, or two passenger car. By the "letter of the law" Rx-7's were available as four passenger cars so they were legal for sedan racing. Once they are stripped for racing, there is no way to tell whether they had seats or bins. Now, as for the possibility of any non-miniature, non-deformed human actually USING the rear seats in those rare Rx-7's is a whole other argument.

As noted, automobile terminology is derived from earlier forms of transportation, including sedan chairs. However, current meanings of the terms are established by authoritative sources and general usage.

When race sanctioning bodies classify an RX-7 as a sedan or saloon, it is for convenience of grouping for competition and not necessarily a statement on the true meaning of the word.

Official SAE standards, major government agencies (EPA, DOT), dictionaries, automobile enthusiast magazines, car clubs, and auto manufacturers themselves all consider a coupe and sedan as distinct body types, albeit with slightly different criteria.

The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is the standards organization for the automotive industry and defines a sedan based on interior volume behind the front seats. The RX-7 is considered a coupe and not a sedan according to the criteria in SAE J1100.

In dictionary definitions and common usage, a "sedan" generally implies four doors and usable rear seats. There are legitimate 2-door sedans, and conversely there are other cars with vestigial rear seats which--like the RX-7--are not sedans.

Automobile terminology is often imprecise, and manufacturers will sometimes use whatever terms sell the most cars. However, in this situation there is a very strong case that the RX-7 is a coupe and not a sedan.
