Rust Repair on rocker panel?
hey all. I have a decent sized rust spot on the bottom of the passenger side rocker panel of my 83'.
How should I go about fixing it? Or should I just replace it? i can post pics if that would help. |

This guy sells the replacement lower panels - gotta be cheaper than having a custom fit piece cut/shaped to replace yours. Likely rust hole is the beginning - probably more of the panel is weakened and will need to be chopped. I bought a set of these - great quality. You can buy which ever panel you need, he makes several. Was a good price even tho from UK, shipping and all- worth a chat...

Sorry - no application yet - both my rear lowers need surgery but $$ holds me back. Bought the parts in advance and they look like a very close match, but I am not a body man.
Here is pic of panel against fender to give an idea - looks pretty close! Certainly enough so a good body shop can make it work. Gotta be better than beating a panel into shape? Stu Aull 80GS Alaska |
hey hopefully i can help you out first what your going to need is a cut off wheel with a cutoff disc( both of these you can find at walmart or at like autozone) a welder some rust treatment stuff and sum old sheet metal like an old hood or sumthin. First cut a square or rectangle out around the rust whole ( dont cut on a bodyline because it makes it harder to make that bend) once you hav cut it out clean off around your metal so you hav a good place to weld the take the peice you cut out and make your template on the spare sheet metal you hav and cut that piece out then fit it up to the whole where you cut the rust out of to make sure its perfect to fit in there you may need to reshape it a little to fit in there then put the rust inhibitoron the inside of the metal where your weldin so that that part doesnt rust over time let it set for a lil bit or wat it says on the directions and then start welding put a couple tack welds at the corners then weld a half a line opposite of each side so that you dont warp the metal (beleive me this is bad if it happens turns you metal into a beer can consistency) after that grind down you welds smooth and bondo and primer and your in business. if you got any qestions hit me up ill b more than happy to help

^^ Use POR15 for the rust coating, it's expensive, but you will sleep easy knowing that it's in there. Don't use a cheap bomb can of rust inhibitor!

Ditto on POR-15. (por-15.com) Nuke-proof products, protects all that hard work your about to undertake...
