Running issue-Please help

So recently on my 84 se, i have been having problems with it running. when i hit the gas it sputters and almost dies while sounding like an automatic gun out my exhaust. last it ran it was idling perfect but when i went to take off it died and never restarted. car did this before but i replaced my coils and it was fine. exchanged my coils for brand new ones and no improvement.. leading plugs have visible spark but trailing do not last i checked a couple days ago.. Scuffed yp contacts on cap and rotor as well with no improvements.. Does this sound like ignitors or what else can it be?

Also a guy is driving from boise to carson city nv TODAY to buy this car and its supposed to be running.. Please help!

first off, a backfire from the exhaust usually indicates an overly rich running engine, faulty ignition components or out of whack timing. i would not adjust the timing if it has not been touched previously. you can do more harm than good at this point. check it if necessary but to not adjust it if you find it within spec.

if you have no trailing ignition (faulty ignitor) you would have no fuel to begin with and your tach would not work. i would first have the injectors cleaned and pressure tested (www.witchhunter.com) and ensure the injector grommets are in good working order. inspect the plugs and wires and check for wear on the plugs or any pitting on the outer surface and ensure the wires are installed properly and in the correct locations. you may also want to check and adjust (if necessary) the tps. you can do this by using a multi meter which is very accurate and a great method or the two light method which requires you to build a test light. check and replace the fuel and air filters if necessary, check for vacuum leaks, check the afm per fsm resistance values, and perform a thorough compression test.

pick up a copy of the factory service manual or download it here: http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual

if an ignitor wasnt working why would there be no fuel?

The fuel pump is wired to only run while the engine is turning, the signal coming from the trailing ignitor. Grab a mirror and look in the sight glasses on both sides of the carb, fuel should come about 1/2 way up. If you don't see fuel check the trailing ignitor first by trying to crank the car with a good charged battery, watching the tach while the engine turns. If the tach stays pegged on 0 rpm while the engine spins, most likely your trailing ignitor is bad as both the fuel pump relay and the tach get their signal from the trailing ignitor. Post back what you find and I'll try to help.

He has a fuel injected car, no carb. His car has no sight glass.

:facepalm1: Yeah, maybe someday I'll learn to read. Hmm on the 13B models the fuel pump was run by the computer. I am assuming you have checked the relay/wiring on the fuel pump?

the fuel pump will not work if there is no trailing ignition.

well it was ignitors just like i thought.

The sound of a gun firing is how I would explain the noise
coming from my exhaust the last 11 ignitors I replaced..
Finally decided to get MSD and eliminate the igniters all together!

11 ignitors???? i've owned over 30 RX-7's in the last 12 years and havent had more than 5 ignitors fail in that time period.. you sir must have some bad luck with ignitors..
