Roof rack?

Am I crazy for wanting to put a roof rack on my RX-7?

I may have need to transport some bulky items.

I'm thinking of making something that bolts through a sunroof, since I have a spare sunroof, and then ratchet-strapping it down to the roof rail.

Yes, I have a huge wagon but I need to take stuff with me where the RX-7 has to go. I may be headed to Tulsa in October to do some motorized ass-whuppin'.

man i have been thinking about a roof rack for my car. I think it would look sweet

BeenJaminJames 06-27-11 10:19 PM

.....and they called ME crazy for autocrossing a gmc suburban.... haha looks like that must've been fun! I think any craziness due to the addition of a roof rack should be far outweighed by the insanity captured in that video. In other words, yes, you're crazy, but don't let that stop you. Have fun, Ben

I plan to put a Thule or Yakima roof rack on eventually. That way I can haul mountain bikes with my SA. I love my Rav4, but it'd be nice to be able to use the SA if I'd like.

Not a SA/FB, or a mountain bike, but I still like it:

i have a old crome lugage rack. i was thinking of putting it back on the 7
It was found in the orignal owners closed carport.
ill put up some picks later. i have never seen it on anyother rx7. it was made for the car.
it ancors to the rain rails above the doors so i know its got to be a factory option.

dbragg 06-28-11 08:52 AM

That SeaSucker is a pretty unique idea, but for the price I'd personally probably rather go with a traditional rack. I also don't like the velcro strap for the rear wheel.

Good info about the rack:

I definitely want to see pics of this.

I wouldn't recommend adding load to the sunroof; the rear latch/jack mechanism is too weak as it is - - they fracture often just from the weight of the roof over time. The weight of the roof (and anything on top it) is carried by the latch/jack, which is rigid, and the roof seals, which compress.

Additional weight on the roof would compress the roof seals further, putting all the stress on that 20-plus-year-old plastic latch/jack assembly.

i'll try to get a pic up today of the crome roof rack

+1 on the Yakima or Thule.
You can find good used Yakima racks on ebay...they attach to the rain gutters and can carry about 100 lbs., plus lots of attachments are available to carry almost anything!

t_g_farrell 06-28-11 01:16 PM

You just need a generic roof rack that can attach to the gutters like this one:

Maybe wally mart has one, ah yes they do:

You guys are Crazy and a hazard to SA/FBs everywhere.

I mean give me a break, how you gonna' ventilate the moon roof?

If it don't fit in the Hatch, it ain't worth buying.

But if I had to get one I'd get one of these:

'Course on an FB he'd be leaning a little more into the wind.

DivinDriver 06-28-11 05:18 PM

Does he double as a battery trickle charger?

Or is that a hybrid?

elmerxfudd 06-28-11 08:22 PM

Photos please, with the bike.

BeenJaminJames 06-28-11 11:21 PM

Anyone else notice his back tire is flat???

+1

I don't think his tire is flat, but rather there is a lot of force on it from the corner of the bumper coupled with his weight. There would be a lot of force on that back tire in that situation.

raerae 06-29-11 08:09 AM

the moon roof works with the lugage rack on no problem.
opens at both settings. and it does fit in the hatch

dbragg 06-29-11 05:41 PM

That luggage rack is pretty cool, and practical for long trips. I wouldnt mind having that around for just in case.

Do what Blake (R.I.P) did.

Make a trailer.

peejay 06-30-11 12:09 PM

Trailers in this state are expensive, otherwise I'd just get a tire trailer and be done with it. I think it's on the order of $50/year minimum and it goes up by weight. Blake's trailer would be cheaper here if he just flat-towed a complete car!

And don't think I haven't considered that :) Find the smallest car over 25 years old I can find, hull it out, and flat-tow it as a trailer.

I LOVE that!

Sad to see an SA go, but at least half of it is still on the road.
