Replating/Recoating RB Header?

Ok, I got to looking under my hood, and Im not too impressed with how long the plating or coating the RB header came with lasts. My header is really nasty grungy looking cause all the plating has come off. Its a realy rough texture now, and I just dont like it :). Anyway, has anyone here has theirs replated somewhere? How much do you think it would cost? I just want something decent to look at besides this nasty looking old crap, or just black. I really wanted it chrome so that when it got hot it would make those cool color effects :). Anyway, just wondering. Thanks.

~T.J.

PS - Odly enough, the presilencer looks damn cool. Its got the look I want for the header :(.

Rx7carl 01-21-03 10:27 AM

Well TJ the presilencer looks nice cause it doesnt get as hot as the header. Jethot2000 will work but its $$$$$. Save your $, buy a new header and have it coated by them.

RotorMotorDriver 01-21-03 10:32 AM

So are you telling me theres no point in trying to have it re-done because its just gonna come off again? Also, am I the only one that has the back of my car "burnt" from the RB exhaust? The entire back of my car above the muffler tips is brownish (toasted marshmallow) in color from the exhaust...Any ideas on what to do about that? Its hard as hell to scrub off. I was thinking of trying to fabricate a shield to divert the exhaust out from under the bumper further.

RotorMotorDriver 01-21-03 10:39 AM

Heres a picture. I have recently scrubbed it off, but if you look close you can see that it normally works its way up around the "Mazda" on the back as well. Its just kind of annoying, and Im scared that if I ever get my car repainted that this is just gonna make it ugly as sin.

thats what smoking does to your lungs too.

H_PersÆng 01-21-03 10:58 AM

lol it sure does, and yet here i am lighting another one....

This seems kind of strange to me that it would set off on the carbody like that....maybe your car is burning to much oil or something.....so instead of trying to divert the smoke you might try to fix the root of the problem?

If not that you could try to weld new pipes onto it and make them a tad longer.

Another thing you might wanna do (to have nice clean pipes) is have a nice stainless steel exhaust installed....that will fix the problem of your not so good looking muffler pipes but not the goow on your car however.

anyways, just my 0.02

All in all i think regular cleaning should help keep the rearend free of this goow

jeremy 01-21-03 11:13 AM

puff puff give, lol. just curious if you are premixing?

I agree.
That will also show up after the motor has had the ATF treatment. That's why I like to use Techron or Amsoil "power foam" instead. It burns out of the exhaust system more completely.

I have the rb header fo the 12a on an 81 chassis that is not plated at all. It is just raw steel and is getting uglier every month. It is my understanding that nothing will put up with the temperatures that the rotary puts out of the exhaust....

HOw bout using the exahust heat wrap tape? Will that hold up well at all?

I have full Racing Beat performance exhaust already...And I dont plan on modifying it. Im also not buring oil to my knowledge, it hasnt showed any signs of that. I just assumed it was from the heat of the exhaust on the back from all the damn flames its always shooting . I thought maybe it was running rich cause of all the flames, but the sparkplugs look perfect.

Nope.

I agree.

No ATF treatments or anything else added to the fuel. It just shows back up after awhile after its all scrubbed off. It usually takes it a few days to build up again.

Yeah, they get uglier, but they will last :). Standard exhaust pipe is crap and will be gone shortly from my understanding though.

Why? Were you talking about the original question about the header looks? I dont wanna wrap it in anything, I just want it shiney again :).

jetcoat is your only real option fo keeping a bling bling look. otherwise, why care? it goes zoom zoom.

i get the headers nickel plated, looks good and its cheap! $20.00 gets the header stripped(rust) and plated! lats a while too(depending on how you drive)ie. the harder you drive the more heat there is!!

Is this what happens when you remove your cat?

Wankelguy 01-21-03 02:08 PM

No.

Rx7carl 01-21-03 02:25 PM

Dont wrap it, itll deteriorate faster.

jeremy 01-21-03 02:59 PM

yep, the jetcoat is on the inside and outside so it will help the header last longer.

Thats what I thought.

Whats the Jet Coat look like? Is it shiney? Thats all that matters :).

SoRRoW 01-21-03 05:25 PM

Jet Coat,Ceramic coat..
I rather spend the cash and get this done on a used header instead of buying a new one..

Rx7carl 01-21-03 05:40 PM
