replacing power antenna
 

Just purchased an 85 rx-7, my second rx I have owned. The power antenna has been replaced with a fixed mount. Is it difficult to replace and do you have to buy the very expensive oem antenna or will others work?

No there are several places you can get a replacement aftermarket ant. I remember autozone used to carry a Metra ant, forget the number but its a nice fit and works good, and at about $40 or so its a steal.

I remember seeing an antenna that you put in your trunk but you don't see from the outside. I think that would be cool then you could just fill the hole where the old antenna was. Don't know where to get one though lol.

Darn, I was hoping this was going to be about how in the world you get the power antenna OUT of the car!

I have to take mine out and clean it (sticky), and for the life of me I can't see how to get it out.

Peejay you have to take out the tail light to get the antena out. Just take the 2 bolts out and slid it out the whole the tail light goes in.

peejay: remove the wheel well interior panel. You'll see two nuts that hold the antenna. Just remove those and feel around in there and unplug the two plugs from the antenna (real pita since they are on opposite sides of the antenna, but you can get at them). then the only thing holding the antenna in is the big nut that goes on the outside of the car, that big fancy chrome looking one. Just reach in and hold the antenna so it doesn't fall when you remove that big nut. Then you have to manuvere it around in there till you can work it through that "big" hole near the back of the body. Hope that makes some sense. Its not *that* bad of a job.

jr69187: you don't have to take the tail light out. I suppose that would make it a bit easier, but not that much.

what do you guys think of putting an antenna from like say a golf, the roof type ones on an rx7?? i was thinking about doing that but i donbt know how it would look, i dont want to look like a uhhhh....moron

The one from the golf would work, but do it the right way and get a power antenna for the stock location.

I've removed/installed the antenna both ways and taking the taillight out first makes it MUCH easier to see what you're doing.

Thanks. I'll try the taillight method. That looks to be simplest way to go about it. (No need to cut panels or work under the car) FWIW it is NOT an OE antenna, looks like a generic parts-store unit from the "universal" mounts holding it in :)

Actaully, I really like that golf antenna idea, I might have to look into that. I would rather fill in the stock hole and make the rear of the car symetrical (sp?) hmmmmmm .......*gears in head start turning*

How does one go about filling a hole that size? I'd like to get rid of the antenna, and eventually the door locks.
