repairing small radiator crack

there is a small crack right were the small piece of pipe that the heater hose is welded on at the bottom of the radiator. there are many different ways to seal it, which would be the best one?

Just make sure you clean the surface very well

Solder it.

Rx7carl 08-25-03 09:01 PM

Thats tought to do on brass if you dont have the proper tools and know how.

The_7 08-25-03 09:38 PM

would solder hold up good?

rhinor61 08-25-03 11:57 PM

SO is this your overheating problem that you talked about earlier postings?

Take it to a radiator shop and spend the $35 and get it done right, OR you can spend $6 on a pack of JB Weld. IT might hold.... for a while... then save up for a new motor.

Come on does everybody on this forum have to short change ever repair.

Is this car becoming the Pinto of this century, bailing wire is the next thing to try.

The best and only way to repair copper radiators is to have it re-soldered. I used to do radiator repair and believe me, JB Weld doesn't work. I hated it when ppl brought radiators in to be repaired after they tried JB Weld, that shit stinks when it burns.

The_7 08-26-03 02:06 AM

this could be a stupid question and please exuse it if it is, but would the solder for electronics work at all?

and rhinor61, no that isnt my overheating problem, i cracked it when i was taking things apart because i bent it and then i bent it back and i think that made the little crack.

Nope different solder, and youll need a torch to braze/solder it. Take it to a shop, if its a small repair, and you bring them the radiator out of the car, itll be a cheap fix.

RXTbone 08-26-03 09:35 AM

Do yourself the favor - take it to the shop. My $.02. :D

Take it to the shop. If you're inexperienced and attempt the solder yourself you may end up with more problems. JB weld is epoxy, and epoxys worst enemy is hot water.

That's a nice looking car, RXTbone.

I just got my 79 radiator fixed for $15 from the old guy that repairs radiators. Very good job and he'll back up his work if it fails. I cant wait till May when my car will be a classic!!!
