relocating charcoal canister

About a week ago I took out the sub zero start tank on my car. Now that I have that space open I'm thinking it would be cool to move the charcoal canister from the strut tower over to where the sub zero tank was. Can I just put it there? Or does it have to be where it is for a reason? TIA

In general, the charcoal canister can be put just about anywhere. It's part of the emissions equipment, so just chuck it somewhere...:)

I would if I could, stupid NJ....

Sure, re-locate it. It's used to reduce the fuel vapor emissions. Just don't remove it otherwise you'll be gaging on the stench of fuel. :puke:

Upload some pics if you do it.

Hmmm, maybe I'll be able to do it tomorrow, I'll be sure to upload pics if I do.

Mine is up underneath by my fuel pump!:)

Yeah I put mine where the cold start assist used to be.

20 minute job at the most.

clears alot of room!

You just disconnected the line at the back?

82transam 12-22-02 02:09 PM

Well, this morning I took the mounting bracket off and moved it to where the tank was, it looks really good, but the holes don't line up, the spacing between the holes on the charcoal canister bracket is much smaller. I mounted it with one bolt to see if I liked it, and then put it back just to be safe. Jimmy: What did you do? make your own bracket or drill a new hole in the firewall? I'm kind of hesitant to do that because there is a lot of stuff back there I'd rather not drill through. also, what did you do about the lines? Trim them? modify the hard line?

82transam 12-26-02 01:36 PM

shameless bump

JIMMY54 12-26-02 02:10 PM

I just used holes that were already there. The lines were not trimmed.

82transam 12-26-02 08:36 PM

How did you use the existing holes? they don't line up, unless i'm missing something.

stinkfist 12-26-02 10:00 PM

You could just drill another hole in the bracket to line up with the existing holes.

Or you could do what I have done with every 1st gen I have owned (4), Chunk it in the woods next to the air pump.

The only time I smelled inside the car was when my Holley was leaking.

Mike

Check out my post count! This post is evil....EVIL, I say! Muh ha ha ha ha !

Won't work, the holes on the firewall are farther apart than the bracket's total size, so I guess I'll have to custom make a bracket of some kind. If i didn't live in NJ I would throw it out, but emmissions are a concern.

I relocated mine straight to the garbage can,

JIMMY54 12-27-02 01:02 PM

I did it a while back so i don't exactly remeber if I used just one hole or two. But i Do know that i removed the cold start bottle and the cruise control crap which may have lead to more holes to use. But even one hole would be enough to hold it up, doesn't weigh that much.

agreed, but seeing as i live in NJ and can't put it there I'll have to settle for putting it on the firewall, it looks good there.
