red hot headers

Im trying to tune my carburator and 5 min ito turning on the car i notice that the headers are red hot, i check my EGT reader and its jumping from 18 to 22 wich is extreme.
What can be the problem?

OneRotor 01-07-09 10:44 PM

running lean? or you may have lost your leading ignition (i think)

SLIDN7 01-07-09 11:08 PM

can i drive the car like this?

Jeezus 01-07-09 11:11 PM

Yes, but hell no.

rotary84 01-07-09 11:59 PM

timing/lean ???? btw did you fix the RPM problem?

Still trying to, I checked for vacumm leaks and no luck so i opened up the carburator changed the power valves from 46 to 65 put it back together and nothing, played with the timming and nothing so i think ill be trying out a edelbrock 650 to c if that fixes something.

The headers might be skorching cause by running it lean is how i got it down to 1700rpm. Got a freind who told me that my carb was to little and that that type of carb was made to idle at 1500 its a holley 350.

If you have a known good carb put it back on and see if the problem goes away. Otherwise it's in the ignition.

I have a Paul Yaw prepped carb and copied what he had done on a spare carb for this very purpose. It was cool when I dyno'ed both carbs to make sure I didn't screw anything up and my carb made 3% more HP. :)

Sounds like a timing issue, vacuum leak, or the carb itself but I kind of dout that...

Im using a 600 right now works good, check your timing though and let us know what its on

If the carb was too small, my gut reaction would be that it'd be hard to make it run lean if you wanted to; you'd be airstarved, I'd assume. Vacuum would be through the roof, velocities would be high, and fuel would flow like no tomorrow.

But I'm just guessing based on physics; experienced carb people, feel fee to fix my lil red wagon.

A stock nikki flows 313 cfm. Don't replace parts randomly, find the problem first.

It sounds more to me that you have burning fuel entering the exhaust. Maybe put those smaller jets back in.

Have you done the idle adjust that was written up and placed in the First Gen FAQ? It may not have the parts in the same location as your carb but the basics are there. Make sure you adjust the right mixture screw as well.

I know trying to find a vacuum leak is a real pain, you spray but the damn fan blows the stuff everywhere. I just gutted the rats nest and blocked the ports I needed to just get the thing going, then got a header and its great.

kiddofspeed 01-08-09 11:57 PM

how long does it take for the headers to glow from cold start??

I did the idle adjustments and nothing, i turned my fans off cause there electric, sprayed some carb cleaner and nothing, I dont have a rats nest and do have rb headers.

Thats exactly what my car is, when i try to adjust it and it starts getting lean it starts turnning off, when i step on it its like it has asma and fuel does go to waste.

Havent actually timed it, will do tommorow.
I did mess with the carb and took it off lean status and was less of a glow.

rxtasy3 01-09-09 11:23 AM

the last time i had a header glow was because the dist was a tooth off. i forget which direction but i think i had to advance it one tooth.

SLIDN7 01-11-09 01:42 AM

fixed everything installing a 600 edelbrock carb.
Shes idlind at 1000, much more power and she dosent choke now.
Thanks guys.

I know I am threadjacking but what if only my REAR tube is glowing red while the front is not, car will not hold an idle and it only starts when I put oil in the spark plug holes and spin it by hand, then let it sit.

Something clogged in the carb, not allowing enough fuel to the rear of the engine. Rebuild the carb and you should be fine...
