Rebuilt Engine, finally starts, smokes and idles terribly
I have a '79 rx-7 that I just rebuilt the motor in. I got it to start for the first time last night. My concern is that it smokes a lot. We ran it for about 45 mins. and it continued to smoke a lot. I know it's normal to smoke quite a bit after a fresh rebuild but is it normal to smoke for this long?
Also, I cannot seem to get the mixture right. Is this normal? Am I missing something obvious? My timing is on, my spark plugs are nice and clean I just am not sure if everything is going the way it's supposed to. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
What does the smoke smell like? Oil, fuel, or coolant?
|
If the carb is running way too rich, or even trying to flood, you'll never get the engine to idle correctly. It will also cause it to smoke.

I can't really tell what the smoke smells like, it smells like a mixture of things. I don't think it really smells like coolant, but it definitely smells some of oil and fuel...
I'll check the carb to see if it's running way to rich. |
Losing any coolant?

Did you machine the end plates? New oil control o-rings?

I don't appear to be losing much coolant but yeah the smoke is white.
My buddy is pretty sure it's the o-rings. Says that if he puts his hand behind the exhaust for a minute it speckles his hand in oil. Sound like a tear down and re-assemble? |
does it just spit condensation or is it for sure oil/coolant, my new rebuild will spit condensation for a bit on thr first start of the day but once its warm it stops, i lose no oil(i premix) or coolant. if its white smoke that disapears right away it may be steam from exhaust condensation, if it stays thick it will likely be coolant, i had one previously that acted like that, it didnt last long or run good ever.
