Rebuild original or swap in later gearbox

Hi guys-hope everybody had a good Thanksgiving. I have a question on my 1979 SA. The gearbox needs a rebuild and I'm wondering if you think it's better to rebuild my existing one or swap in a later model gearbox that will bolt right up. I'm still a total newbie so please feel comfortable taking me to school here. Is there a reason to use a later gearbox related to durability? If I use a later gearbox what will bolt up in position the shifter in the existing console opening?

I would go for the rebuild or source out another 79-80 transmission . Later trans will not have the shifter in the same location its pushed back about 3".

I have a 79 and I was asking the same questions and doing research some time ago. Basically, unless you're making enough power to justify needing a TII transmission then there is no reason to change from the stock trans.

I think it's worthbuying it if you personally know the seller and buy another gearbox... that way as you rebuild yours your car isn't out of comission.

Thanks. I connected with Neptune in Huntington Beach for the rebuild.
