Which rear LSD Disc brake rear is an exact swap into a SA22??

I have a drum brake open diff rear in my car now (1980). I want a LSD rear with discs for my car.

I was told that 79-83 Rears are small bearing???... I guess...

Also if I understand, the 83 driveshaft flange is different...

So...is 79-82 rears the only one that is a direct bolt in??

small axle end 81-82; 83 is lil tricky

I guess 83 you have to rig up the driveshaft???

I already have a GSL-SE rear...is it worth it to go through the hassle to install it?? I really wanted to keep my old school 4X110mm wheels...

Isn't the pitch on the brake lines different for the 79's? I think respeed makes line adapters.

There is no rigging of the driveshaft. You use the 83 and later model driveshaft which is the larger pinion shaft one. It is a direct bolt in. Small flanged driveshaft with 79-82 model diffs and large flanged driveshaft with 83-85 diffs.

If you want larger brakes and a better bolt pattern for better choices on wheels then the SE would be worth the swap.

Yep believe SA has coarser pitch than FB. Racing Beat makes an adapter (or did) hose if Respeed does not....
think you need the 2 rear hand-brake lines too, off FB axle??

ok i know this is a really old thread but im wondering the samething if i put an 85 gsl rearend in my 80 rx7 i know as far as the flang goes the right match would be to use the 85 driveshaft but will the yoke on the 85 shaft slide in to the stock 80 transmission without any modification?

Sgt.Stinkfist 10-06-12 12:50 AM

the transmission end of the shaft is the same for all 1st gens. so if you wanna use a rear from an 85, just get the 83+ driveshaft, itll fit just fine. The only odd-ball part will the the adapter line for the SA chassis w/ a corse thread pitch line to the later model rear w/ the fine thread pitch line
