Rear-End Identification

I need to get some parts for my rear-end, I have disk brakes but I have a GS so they are not original. I was wondering how to find out how to tell if the rear-end is for my year or is it off an earlier RX-7

I believe they changed the driveshaft flange from a smaller one in 1983 to a larger one in 1984... Don't know the sizes though.

Look for the link to Felixs site in the FAQ sticky.

I did not know that, thanks.

So I should look at the flange?

Rear discs did not and never came from the factory on a GS. Only on the GSL and GSL-SE.

If the rear rotors are vented, you have a GSL-SE rear. (You can't put -SE rotors on non-SE axles since the offset is different)

You can't trust the driveshaft flange for two reasons - one, the '83 rear had the early small axle bearings and the later driveshaft flange, and two, people sometimes swap the flange instead of the driveshaft when moving stuff around. Besides, if you put an early flange on a later car, you get to use an early driveshaft with its easily-replaceable U-joints.
