Rear end gears?

i have an 82 rx7 GSl, I know it has the strongest rear axle assmbely but i bent an axle at a drift event, now i swapped it for a diffrent axle assmeble supposily an 83 axle( but i think it might be an 84 it was from a junkyard), i know it has the bigger axle splines then the 82 so i couldn't swap just the axle, i swapped the whole thing, the question is, Do they have diffrent Rear end gears, i feel like it does, because they seem alot taller and longer, aka make things really hard to drift unless i really spin the motor 9000rpm+ range(that scares me and blows motor up.) I want to know if i can just swap the gears out of the 82, and be ok again. or if there are gears i can make thing even better with. i just could find any specs on this stuff o ri could have answer the question myself.

the gear ratios are virtually the same. Perhaps the LSD unit isn't as good as your old one.
Please post some good pics of your hood. I would like to see it.

Well i'll have to see, because it made ALOT slower. My speed should have read faster because of my wheels but instead read 10-15mph slower then i was really going. The LSD was never a problem, as long as i could go fast. i think i'll change them to the 4.88 and weld the diff. unless there is a better ratio that i can find, hopefully that will work for what i want it to.

As for my hood, i'll post up what pics i do have of it.

sorry i don't have to many of the hood, it is the on ei run at drift events, so the engine bay has some where to let out heat at low speed. i dunno, i like. it works.

All FB's are pretty much 3.909 rear gear ratio, with the exception of the GSL-SE's.

You Can get 4.44's for the FB though.

What Vent is that? I would like at least one good closeup.

See now I had the same sort of situation happen to me except it was going from an 83 pumpkin to an 82 pumkin. I figured someone probably changed out the gears in mine from stock and that's why the my acceleration is down a bit. This could also be your problem also, The only way to tell is count the gears in your old housing.

Mark the driveshaft and the wheel. Count the numbers of turns the shaft makes for one full revolution of the wheel. That will give an idea of the gear in the car. Out of the car, divide the ring by the pinion.

Iirc, aren't all of the non SE and SE autos 3.909.

sorry i have to tell you that i don't have any more photos of the hood and can't take them as the car is in milwaukee and i'm in minneapolis. It is a mk1, MR2 side scoop vent i molded to fit the hood. It was just something i had laying around. i was like, hmmm, extra hood, MR2 vent, hmmmm.....sweet scoop goodness. the kai sportage is sounding pretty nice as it would be $100.00 or less.
