rear coilovers - who`s got `em?
 

So, debating on what I want to do with the suspension on my 84 GSL, I decided I want to get a set of FC coilovers for use with a full subframe swap. Probably TEIN while I am here in Japan. Fronts should be easy enough, but the rears I am not sure about. From abeomid I understand that the stock strut tower isn`t strong enough to support the weight, and the spring location doesnt have enough travel area. Is this correct? I dont have a FB around to check at the moment..
Anyone installed coilovers by modifying the area around the stock strut tower? Or do you need to do something completely different? I`m curious to see how people have done coilover setups on the rear.

Unless your ready to re-engineer the entire rear unibody torque box to accept IRS,just buy an FC.

Not trying to be negative,but the FB body was designed for a solid axle.

I remember reading an article somebody posted about a renesis swap into a sa22 awhile back, but no pics of the setup.
steve84: It`s cool. But, whats wrong with using coilovers with a solid axle? Some cutting and welding in the right places should do the trick. I got some ideas, but I want to see what somebody else has already done to save me some effort.

OK,just coilovers shouldnt be too hard,just a matter of identifying the weak points in the area and strengthening them.It would still be a solid axle though,so the advantages would be minimal.
You mentioned a full subframe so I assumed you were planning the often asked about, "full FC rearend swap",which would be very labor intensive.

i have koni coilovers on my first gen, for drag racing though...and yes they are in the stock location(as per nhra rules) ...they work great

Actually the car in question is back in the states. I`ll be doing the work when I get back and am collecting parts at the moment. Used coilovers are cheap here. I wanted to see if I could fit a whole set on my FB before I bought them.
Oh, and by full subframe swap, I meant the front only. The rear mods for IRS would be strenuous I think. Too much hassle for me.

680RWHP12A: so you used the stock shock tower location to mount them? No warpage of the metal on the area after repeated launches, it worked okay? Didn`t have to reinforce anything?

no reinforcing at all, thats a strong part of the car from the factory, and i still use the stock springs too, for added stiffness... lots of launches, and no problems yet!!

on another note, we welded up all the mounting "boxes" where they were spot welded , because those are known to rip off the car on hard launches..

the "BOXES " are where the upper and lower controll linke attach to the chassis if you were wondering
