Is it really this slow?
 

Or do I need a tune-up?

I barely beat an old lady in a Prius last night. But back in November on the hill country cruise I was keeping up with 3 series BMWs on some twisties.

Those little hybrids have a torquey little electric motor, starting in low rpms. Makes for a long powerband. I have an electric powered fb, and a rotary fb. The electric one can burn the tires free at low speed in 3th gear without dropping the clutch.

The prius isn't as lame as many make it out to be. But yeah rotaries still kick butt!

On another note, was the old lady egging you on for a street race? That must have been hilarious!

off the line the fb wont be as quick as the prius, but once you are rolling you will drive off from it. i cant remember the exact number, but they have something like 200 tq at 0 rpm, and 100 peak tq with the gas engine. the electric motor just get the car rolling and the gas engine takes over at around 2000 rpm. it will launch like a vette and accelerate like a metro lol.

If it's a new gen3 Prius, it will be reasonably quick. They have a 1.8l engine.

You do need a tuneup tho. They run 10.0 to 60 with our regular test driver at the helm, which means a reasonably well running FB should beat it to 60.

but heres the best ways to bring your 12a back to lift in order of importance(my setup)
1. NGK plugs, NGK wires, new dizzy cap and rotor(any brand works)
2. air filter(dont buy K&N junk, even cheap ass fram is better than K&N lol) seriously!
3. carb rebuild, fresh gas
4. oil change
5.remove air pump
6. RB header, no cats, resignator, magnaflow muffler(descent back pressure but more free flowing than stock)
7.electric fan can help just make sure its a low amp draw fan because they CAN use more HP than a mechanical if they draw too much, about 6-8 amps is a good fan


then there is always the more pricey options....port job, RB intake, sterling carb, turbo, supercharger, NOS lol

clutch kick in first

I've got all that stuff (except the options) and a racing PP with HD S/S clutch ( might as well get as much power to the wheels as this things got left). I found out this morning that the nut holding the throttle was not connected. I think it'll do better now. It's still hilarious that an old lady raced me and nearly won.

My car usually smokes out other cars, not necessarily beating them.

Racing a prius is so uncool! Would John Travolta be racing a Prius in Pulp Fiction when he was shooting up brown mexican tar heroin in his classy t-bird convertable going to pick up Uma Thurman to win a dance contest??

The rotary has plenty of potential, but it came from the factory absolutely smothered and nuetered. If you let it breath (free flowing exhaust, high performance carb) then you will start to actually tap in to that potential.

When I added the RB exhaust and the Sterling, the difference was amazing. Such a little change can make such a huge improvement!

And stop racing Prius type cars. That's like a bully trying to steal a kid's lunch money, which makes it even more embarasing when that little kid whoops your ass. :)

i raced a prius before and it was actually fast-ish....we were going up the mountain and i'm doing the speed limit he pulls up beside me with some guy hanging out the window screaming engine noises and pointing and laughing at my car...i couldn't really let them think that that's all my car had, then i stomped it and he was still pulling away ...i had to downshift and stomp it again we got up to 90 and i was a good 200 yards infront of him before i decided to back off the throttle but it was a fun little race. mind you it took forever to get up to speed cuz we were going up the mountain lol.

I rented a 1st gen and 2nd gen prius and they have some zip. They blow going up hills unless you get a good run at it first. Kinda like stock 1st gens :-).

Turbo, and all the Prius will see are your antique plates.
