really noob questions re 85 gsl. ive searched, trust me.
 

ok, brand new owner of a 85 gsl, got a couple of questions that the search function wasnt all that helpful on, but i probably wasnt searching the right topics.

1. its got a manual choke, sometimes it starts, sometimes it dosnt. is there a surefire way to start it, a set method, or just all trial & error?


2. air pump: it isnt connected. the guy i bought it from was a really cool older guy who loves his 7s, but also had no idea what it was. the search told me what it was, but what does it do, and is it hurting my car not to have it connected?

the mods (that i know of): k&n intake/air filter, headers & exhaust, no cat (cept on the hood, he likes it cuz its warm)

again, im sorry if the answers to these Q's have been given previously, i just cant find em

1. It was originally a "Semi-automatic" choke. You manually set it, but it releases on it's own once the engine is up to proper temp.
Pulling the choke out as you crank the engine over, and pushing it part way back in after it starts. The choke is not always needed, just in colder weather.

2. The air pump supplies extra air to the assist the cat in cleaning up the exhaust. No cat, means no need to worry about hooking it up, unless you need to pass emmission testing. For that, you will need a cat.....

what kind of condition is the car in...if its never had a carb rebuild in 20 years...it might not necessarily need one but a good cleaning never hurt anyone...make sure you do a complete fluid drain...then use new fluids...not necessary but doesn't hurt and makes things run smoother...then just slowly look over the motor for anything that may need a good cleaning or replacing...wires...plugs...filter...etc...

Each one has it's own procedure that you will have to figure out.

My 79 with 48 DCOE is
turn on the switch and let the fuel pump come up.
pump twice and spin it over, if it fires then feather till it is running good.
if not pump twice and try again.


83 I had was
pump twice pull choke spin and pray.
pump once pull choke spin and pray.

Wifes 83 LE.

Pump twice, pull choke and spin.
Repeat untill it starts.
^^ has a bad water seal and does not like to start, if it sits more then two weeks then I have to put the jump start on it.

I agree since these cars are so old each one has its own "personailty" so theres no set method to start one. But a fairly common approach is what hades12 says, pump the gas a few times either before or during cranking while holding the choke on. it always works for me on both my 83's, even when its 0 degrees F outside.
