Rat Nest Removal - No more backfires!!

Hey,

For those of you who are sick of your loud-ass backfiring, you may be interested in removing your emmisions gear (if you haven't already).

My seven used to backfire and shoot flames like a mofo. After removing my rat nest, hot start assist, air control valve and a bunch of other un-needed carb shit, no more backfires at all!
I am told it has much to do with the shutter valve no longer cutting off air and messing things up.

Motor looks a lot cleaner now too;)

I'm real intrested on what can be eliminated on a GSL-SE. There's alot of BS in there I think I can do w/o but I'm not about to rip it out until I know what I NEED. Anyone have any links or advice? I know there was a write up before the board got hacked, anyone wanna repost it for me?

i would be interested in the same info on the earlier models, non gsl-se. in specific, if anyone is floating around with an rx-4 engine that knows this stuff, that is really want i need... but....

hey speckamp

yesterday i removed my airpump , my acv( u can get an block off plate from mazdatrix for 6 bucks .) and the muffler thing under the air box.(wich was attached to the acv). Whithout the acv the engine bay is a lot nicer, cleaner and bigger. You can finnaly see your 2 six port actuator perfectly too(finnaly some room so i can test em).

with the mufler thing the acv and the air pump i say it took out a good 40 pounds.

I wanted to do that 2 but i still have 1 more test to go

I'd like to rip all that stuff out of my 83 gsl too. I'm not sure what I need though. Any info somone could post in this thred would be great. I passed my e-test with flying colors, would removing this junk this make for no pass in the future?

I have no emissions stuff and my Rex spits and snorts like a crazed bull!!!!!!!! Hell Godzilla himself would be impressed by the flames that used to shoot from the tail end of my 7!!!!!!!
This was all before I threw an apex seal.....

While we're on the topic of removing things to make my car backfire less... what is the "rat's nest" and the "hot-start assist" and the "air control valve" and where are they located?

Also, how do I remove them?

Thanks

emissions

Bennett, if you remove the stuff that is in question you will definately not pass emissions again. so either save it so it can be reinstalled or forget about passing a e-test.

GSL-SE, you do realize that if you remove your airpump you're gonna lose the pressure that feeds your 6-port's, right? They open by a little vaccum line running to the split air-pipe. If that pipe (the pipe that feeds the cat), your airpump, ect, are removed, you're not gonna get those ports opening.

To give you an idea what this does, let me post these numbers.
w/o split air pipe (it broke off)
top speed in 4th: 105mph

once I replaced the cat and hooked the pipe back up
top speed in 4th: 119mph

Either remove the sleeves so the ports are always open and deal with the loss in low-end power, or put the air pump back in, and rig up an RPM actuated switch a-la the 2nd gen guys (do a search for 6 port mod in the second gen section and you'll prolly find a post about it w/ instructions) else you're prolly losing 10-20HP in the top end.
