Radio Knob causing static
 

Hello all,
My '83 radio works, but has tons of static until I find a "sweet spot" on the volume knob. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean the volume pot hopefully without taking apart the dash or trim? The radio is referred to as the digital electronic am/fm-mpx and cassette with clock.

Pretty much the only way to clean a pot without opening anything up is just going to be (with the key/car off) turn the knob fully back and forth a whole bunch. Sometimes it'll help a bit, sometimes not. To do it properly you really need to pull the unit out of the dash and open it up so you can get some cleaner into the pot housing and onto the wipers.

Best to remove the head unit to avoid plastics and such as it can leave "trails" (even thoughsit says safe for plastics). Use the tube and jet the stuff into the potentiometer via the shaft area as well as any spot where the pot is vented. Soak it really good and let it dry, 2 or 3 minutes. Do all of the other controls too, might as well.

Generally this stuff has a lubricant in it that helps avoid the problem in future.
