Radio Install--n00b help
I have an '83 GSL with the Clarion sound system factory. But all it does is make static so It's time to upgrade. I took it all out and saw some strange looking connectors. I called some local custom shops to track down the radio plug adapter with no luck. Last resort is cutting and splicing. Unless I can use the wires off the back of my old clarion since its junk anyways. I just need to know which wires are which. Couldn't find that info in Haynes or by searching here so help me out. If there is already something on here that I overlooked, please send a link. Thanks for any help in advance.

When I did it, I didn't cut any of the wires.
I don't remember what color is what, but you really only need to find two of the cables. Just use a multimeter to find out which wires are constant power and accessory power, then use a spade connector (can find at radio shack, lowes, etc) and plug it in instead of chopping the wires. Now that you have power, run new cables for the speakers and you will be set. I wouldn't reuse the old speaker connections, that is likely what is making the static. |
I saw a wiring diagram in a post awhile back- search and you should be able to find it...

just get the 2 radio harness' and you'll be fine. no splicing required.

The wierd plugs are DIN connectors for the factory amps located in the area of the rear bins.
Just use a Constant power, Switched Power, and a Ground from the dash. Then run 4 pairs of speaker wire straight to the bins. Then disconnect the speaker leads from the factory amps, and connect them to your aftermarket radio wires that you just ran. It works, and is much easier than running new wires to the speakers unnecessarily. Good Luck. |
