Rad. Fan

Hey guys. I've been away from the site awhile due to a bad housing (details in other post). Any way, the thermostat was also stuck and brought up the issue of cooling and vetalation to me and my pops. We decided to go with an electric fan but I don't wanna go to pepboys and get peice of (excuse my high school french) shit fan that''l only last us a week. We wanna go with a low amp fan but one that provides high rmp's for better cooling that the stock one. Can anyone help us out on a rad. fan that'll fit over the stock rad.???

Thanks

Nector

EDIT:I forgot to give the specs. I have a 82 chassis with an 85 13B Carbed. I think the carb. is the 82 one if there is a difference between the 12a and the 13b please let me know so that I can check and find out

I just picked up a double electric fan from a Toyota MR2. Haven't installed it yet though, so I can't tell you how it worked out. I've heard that the fans from the Fieros are pretty good though. Good luck.

Yeah. Alot use the Taurus or Fiero fans. Do a search and find bunches of info on years and stuff.

HERE is a good write up on how to wire it

Thanks guys. Any more suggestions??

VB has one

RotaryRyan 08-18-04 10:57 PM

trochoid said that advance auto sells the same fan as VB for $50 cheaper.

Go with the taurus or fiero fan. It's cheap, easy to put in, and many people have already tested it and it works good. Really though, if your fan clutch is good it'll keep it plenty cool, still works perfect on my car :)

Fiero and especially the Taurus fans are not low amp as you were looking for ... up to 100 amps initial draw; 30-40 amps continuous running draw.

There are other aftermarket makes like DERALE, JET, Be Cool, and the popular Flex-a-Lite Black Magic ... moving 2800 CFM at only 14 amps.

Just like coldy said though, the stock clutch fan will keep your car plenty cool, and they rarely go bad

is the only point of an electric fan to reduce drag on your motor and is it just hooked up constant with the ignition?

RotaryRyan 08-18-04 11:44 PM

you can run it constant but its a good idea to run a thermostat and switch. read the link i posted above

Since my name was mentioned, I thought I would post picks of how I installed my e-fan.

The first pick is the overall view of the fan.

The second pic is the thermocouple placement.

The third pic is the thermostat placement .

The fouth pic is where I tied into + switched with the ignition. It's the blue wire with a spade terminal. Ground goes staight to the battery.

The last pic is the rest of the engine bay.

Enjoy.

Oops, my mistake. Didn't realize this was the first gen forum. Everthing will be the same except the positive hookup. I still need to do this mod to my 85, but I haven't decided where to pull power from. If nothing else, it's easier to take pics of a second gen for reference purposes.

RotaryRyan 08-19-04 07:59 PM

how much is that fan? I paid like $40 for mine new

trochoid 08-19-04 09:17 PM

That is the VB fan that I overpaid for. $129.95 for the fan and $24.95 for the adjustable thermostat. OUCH
