racing fuel cell recommendation

I need to get a fuel cell for my 1985 SCCA Mazda RX7 which I race in the ITS division.

I would imagine this modification must have occured many times back in the day, but I can't find any recommendations on the web. I'm looking for a make and model # which would fit my vehicle and perhaps some installation advice.

Any suggestions?

You should ask in the Race Car Tech section. Actually if you search in there I'm sure you can find something.

Measure the width of the frame rails. This is the max width you can run.

Remove the stock tank. Cut out the spare tire well by cutting all the way around it about 3/4" below the floor. This helps keep some strenght to the floor section.

Build a mounting structure to hold the cell in from the underneath. Most seems to use 1" square steel tube for this.

Cut a piece of steel sheet out the diameter of the wheel well opening and tack weld it in place. You will notice a recess around the cut out hole. This makes a perfect ledge for the sheet to sit on.

Leave a opening directly above the filler in the cell. Make a hinged door to cover the opening.

This keeps the cell low for good CG. Also, keeps the cell and filler outside the driver compartment so you do not need to make a sheet metal interior enclosure.
