question on white smoke

Ok this is what happend. I went out the my wife moms house today. i want to start my 85 gls that i just got last weekend form texas. i have been driving it a some, but not alot. when i sent 2 start it today i pulled the choke befor i started it,because its about 37 degrees in arkansas. well after i started the car it was running fine. then i looked back and the car was smoking really bad. there was so much smoke that it covered the yard. the car was not at running temp yet.also i had th choke stil pulled. when i pushed the choke slowly it smoke start 2 stoped coming out the exhaust.

no more than 30 seconds after pushing the all the way in the can stoped smoking and did not smoke anymore. i drove it around after it was at running temp. it did not smoke anymore after that, so what do yal think it could be.

You probably have sugar in your tank.

Old carb rotaries smoke like a train with the choke pulled out. It's normal for old engines to smoke a little on startup because the oil seals get a little leaky, not really a big deal. But since the metered oil is mixed with the fuel in the carb, when you pull the choke and it runs super rich, it runs super rich on oil too and it just is too much oil, and combined with steam from water condensation, here comes the fluffy white clouds. I like to look for animal shapes in the clouds, you know, rhinos, dogs and of course sheap. You should see my RX-4, whenever I start it all the neighbors run for cover. It's not a big deal as long as it goes away when it warms up.

You also might want to invest in some o-rings and new intake gasket for the intake since you said that the smoke was white. Coolant might just be getting into your intake and mixing in the combustion chamber with the fuel. Had the same problem with my RX-7 when I first purchased it about 4 years ago. Those o-rings are know to fail at any moment since our cars are 22 years and older.

ok. how are is it to replace the o-rings and the intake gasket. also do u think i should replace the exaust manifold.

Even without the choke pulled out it will still smoke. Its perfectly fine and once the exhaust warms up it wont smoke anymore. Mine does it too when it is cold outside. When its hot outside, theres nothing in site.

I used the directions in the Haynes manual when I replaced mine. It is not hard as long you have some basic mechanical skills. Just my opinion so don't shoot missiles at me people. I really do not think that you should replace the exhaust manifold. Unless you see signs of black soot in that general area.

It could be an issue with your o-rings, but I wouldn't start worrying just yet. Check the level of your coolant, and make sure you aren't losing any. Chances are this is just the normal cold morning fog produced by any motor.

I had minimal coolant loss when my FB was smoking up the neighborhood with the white smoke. Just a little in the combustion chamber goes a long way when it comes to a SA/FB producing white smoke. Oh yeah I noticed this morning that my FB only produce the condensation smoke for only like 20 seconds on the initial start up with the choke out. This is a very high mileage motor too. Checked this morning since it was like 10 degrees outside. Also remember that white smoke can be coolant or water, black smoke is fuel, and blue smoke is oil.

ok well its like 36 in conway arkansas and i am going 2 go out and start the car in a lil while. i will let yal know if it smokes or not.also what happens if it does not smoke like last time or does not smoke at all like normal. that car has like 150k on it and i am putting headers on the car on the 1st replacing the intake gasket and running a new exhaust. then in april i am going 2 do the rest.
