Question about Engine Timing Point.
 

I just got my self a timing gun and I need a bit of help here. I was wondering if anyone can tell me and show me a picture to where I am suppost to aim my gun at. I am looking for the marks or point mark to where I need to see if my engine is off time. Can anyone help me with this?

Here's the front of the 13B I'm putting into my '85 GS. Your's will look a little different, but the idea is the same. The red circle shows where there's a pointer on the front cover, and there should be timing marks on the pulley. It's been a while since I set the timing, but if I remember right there are two marks on my '79...one for leading and one for trailing. I think the Haynes manual will give more info on this.

Hey bro thanks, so now I have to find the marks on my pulley wheel. I looks and clean it with a rag but can't find the actual marks. I had tone of marks around there. lol Hope I don't miss time my car bad instead of timing it right.

On my 2 engines the mark was actually a small amount of white paint on the inner lip of the front pulley. There was also very small indents on the pulleys...

Yeah, any paint on there is LONG GONE on mine, and the minor deterioration of the outer pulley has removed any marks once etched there.

I'm looking for a good way to re-mark my pulley, but so far have yet to find it.

If someone can answer me these two questions for which a search revealed nothing, they will get a cookie, and be imortalized in the archive:

1. Is the 12a pulley keyed? IE: Can I take mine off, and swap it with another one without worrying about putting it on the wrong way? I seem to recall that the 12a pulleys go on any of the four ways, and that scares me (do you want your timing spot on, or 90, 180 or 270 degrees off?)

2. How in God's name can I re-mark a pulley that has lost all its marks? Details Details Details. Short of rebuilding the engine of course. I've read Mazdatrix' article on removing the pulleys, I just need to know wherethefork to make the marks! (and it doesn't help that I want to be as exact as humanly possible)

I don't want an underdrive pulley (or I'd buy the one from Racingbeat). Even if I did buy one, I want to make sure I put it on the right way!

Well I can try to answer the first question of yours there. When I removed my engine and put my new one in I messed up the timing and needed to reset the timing. Anyways the front pulley can be installed 4 different ways... The pulley is supposed to be installed so that the pulley is bolted on when the Key is at the 9 o'clock position. Another way to do this is to take off the flywheel inspection plate and line up the skinny part of the flywheel with the uncovered inspection plate.

At this point the front pulley will line up with the one timing point. And if I remember correctly when the pulley is then placed on (the key needs to be exactly at the 9 o'clock position remember) the timing mark on the block will line up with the leading timing mark.

By all means if I got something wrong someone please correct me, im going off memory...

I think Dan's got it right. You can also measure around the pulley and make additional timing marks for advance/retard. I believe that 1mm = 1 degree, so you can measure and mark accordingly. I have yet to do this, but read it on this forum so it must be true...:)

As for marking it, I don't know why Mazda didn't keep doing it the way they did on the '79. It has notches in it...very easy to see. If you can get to it with a dremel or small die grinder, you could put notches in it. I'll see if I can get a picture of the marks on my '79.

Can we see what direction the arrow on the distributor cap is pointing at?

Dose the distributor cap have a arrow? I would have to look at that today.

Ok the first mark on the pully is leading. So the arrow on the rotor should be pointing to L1 on the cap.

Oh! hmm brb going to check to make sure I did this right. hehe

Update: Ok it is point at the L1 so is all good.

Here's a picture of the pointer and the timing marks on my '79, and a picture of the rotor orientation at top dead center.

IIRC the timing mark will be at the pin with that arrow pointing in either direction.... because the number of turns of the pulley vs. the number of turns of the distributor isn't 1:1

64mgb, is that an original pulley with an original timing mark?

I've gotta snap a pic of mine, no mark I can find like that anywhere!
