Putting 83 engine into a 84
 

I am going to be taking the engine out of a 1983 GSL 5-speed and placing it in a 1984 GSL 5-speed. Both are 12a engines. Will the transmissions line up OK? How about the differences in the oil coolers? Any other words of wisdom?

they are both the exact same thing ... no differences, but age!

Actually, there are some differences between them (I just put a 84 engine into an 83 :)). The harnesses comes from the opposite side of the car, the harness on the 83 is on the drivers side, but its on the passenger on the 84. You can still get the stuff to hook up ok, but its a little tricky. The carbs are a little different too. There are some extra silonoids on the 84 carb that arent on the 83, so watch out for that...There is also one different vaccum line that I found...Thats about all I can think of right now.

If you swap the carb, intake manifold and emissions control mess on top of the engines it will be easier. Use the 83 block and install the 84 intake, carb, wiring, and the rat's nest from the top of the engine. If you leave all the parts connected together and remove them as one unit (more or less) it is pretty simple.

There aren't many advantages to living in MN. But, one of them is we no longer have emission checks. So I will try to elimate the "rat's nest" to the best of my ability. And it really is a mess.
