push button starter??

I have an 85 gsl, when i bought it we didnt have a key so we pulled the ignition switch to where you could use a flat head screw driver.

Well as of 5 mins. ago i tried to start the car and i felt it strip from the inside to where i cant even cut the ignition on.

So i figure its time for a push button and a kill switch, anybody know how to wire one up? Or another cheap fix?

Thx, Daniel

check local salvage yards for the complete switch and cylinder with key. get the door and hatch locks as well so they all match one key. or post a want to buy thread. if u still insist on going with a push button, u'll need to get one that is specifically a starter push button as it will be a heavier duty switch than just a normal push button one. same holds true for a toggle switch for ignition and accessories on/off. the starter button is easiest of the whole setup as it can be wired straight to the starter instead of having to go thru the wiring from the original switch. get the fsm if u don't already have one for what wires r what from the ignition switch and go from there.

You can get by this by using a suitable relay, however replacing the ignition switch would be much better approach.

Get a push starter button from Advance auto or somewhere like that. Shouldn't be more than
$10 or so. Find a wire you can tap into that has power when the ignition is on (alternatively,
just grab power directly from the battery). Run the power to the switch, then from the switch
to a female spade connect to the solenoid on the starter. Viola!

Now depending on where you grab the power from will depend on when you can start. If you
pull the power from the positive of the coils (for instance), you can't start it unless you have
the ignition on. If you grab it from the battery you can engage the starter at any time.

autozone has a universal ignition with key for $10, would that be hard to wire up? it has four hook ups on it

Another choice would be to use toggle switches like the Indy drivers do. If you get a heavy duty one that lights up when it is on for the ignition, and then a spring loaded one for the starter you would be all set. Check Summit racing if your local parts store doesn't have them. Turn on your ignition, and then have the spring loaded one triggering a 50 Amp rellay for the starter. Eazy peazy and unless you just have to have a stock look they will look cool on the dash. On the other hand, how do you lock your car? I would also agree that you should be able to get an ignition, and door locks all keyed the same at a reasonable price. Check e-bay!

My problem is figiring what wires go where but i think just going stock would be easiest

So are you looking to reuse the stock harness?

This will help you:

Well i picked up a dorman universal starter switch for ten bucks, and it has four hook-ups
acc. ign. and batt. and one point in the middle un-labeled. Ground maybe?

rxtasy3 May 29, 2010 03:56 PM

possibly. it didn't come with instruction sheet?

I just hooked up the track car similar to the link a little below. You can put he relays below the steering column and when you loosen some of the wiring attachments, it give you enough extra wiring to do what you need. If you have any questions, send me a PM and I'll be happy to help.

I think I'm eventually gonna convert to push button too. I think I'm gonna go with this one.
