push button start on 1st gen?

okay, I replaced the starter on my car and it still won't start... when I replaced the starter I got a new solenoid with it.. so whole new unit..
well, dumb car still won't start.
so instead of replacing my ignition system ( the key thingee) I've decided to just get a push button start.
I was just wondering if anyone on here has done it.
I just need to know where to hook up the wire on the starter from the switch.
I don't want to start putting wires on the starter, and blowing something else up..
so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
God Bless.
John W.

PM v8kilr

Your gonna need to wire a relay from 30amp+ solid 12V to the solenoid wire controlled by a negative trigger relay

BoominRX7 06-17-02 11:15 PM

uhm...
speak english???
I got lost after pm v8kilr (which I'm doing after I post this)
thanks for the help, I'm gonna try and get ahold of v8kilr

Jimmy54 has the same thing done as well. You could PM him.

Sorry 12 years of car stereo there, I forget not everyone knows how to wire a relay as soon as you look at it :)

85 goes to a 2 position 2 prong momentary switch (other side of the switch goes to ground 12v negative)
86 & 87 go to 12V constant, (FUSE THE WIRE WHERE YOU CONTACT 12v AT THE COLUMN!!!)
30 Goes to the starter solenoid wire

All the wires are at the column :)

you use a small amperage switch and the relay so you dont have to get a 30Amp big ugly ass knife switch

If you pass 12V through a small switch you gonna have a nice fire to roast your wiring and marshmellows :)

here is a nice little write i just did,
this is truley the best way to do the job,
but i did not go with a negative switch as mike p said to do,
the reason is found at the bottom of the text

these wire colors will work for 82-85 rx7's

ok if you want to keep your key to turn on the ignition,
but just want a button to start it then here is how you do it,

i recomend that you have basic electronic knowledge

you will need these things

a push button of your choice
a standard relay "you can pick one up from radio shack as well as an alarm shop or even a best buy"
and a little bit of wire
if they ask what kind of relay then tell then a single pole /single throw relay will do just fine,"then you can sound smart"
also request that it be 30 amp or higher
if all you can get is two 15 amp relays, then you can wire them identical side by side and you now have a giant 30 amp relay,
i dont suggest this however because space is limited

the wire for the push button it self can be 14 agu
and you will need about 2 feet to be safe
then you will need a little wire for the relay
do not go any smaller then 12 gauge

ok take the column plastic panels off and the lower plastice panel to access the ignition wires

here are the colors to look for
start wire - Black/Yellow
ignition #2 - Black/Yellow
+ 12 Volts - White/Red

ok start by finding these three wires,
the large black/yellow will be your starter wire
the smaller black/yellow will be your ignition #2

i will explain why to use the ignition #2 wire over the #1 wire later

ok know that you have the three wires its time to get dirty.
make sure you have proper connectors and/or solder w/ heat shrink tubing

you should not use electrical tape,
if think you have to then go ahead,
but a true profesional does not use electrical tape unless it is to hold a large group of wires together, which you could also use a zip tie for.

mount your push button and make sure the wires are accesable

run one wire from your push button to your igintion # 2 wire "small Black/Yellow"

get out your relay and get ready to wire

here is the run down

on the bottom of your relay you shoudl notice numbers
some have 5 pins others only have 4
dont worry if you have 4,
you didnt get cheated and it will work fine

here are the pin numbers you should see
30
85
86
87
87a "5 pin only"

85 will go to a ground
86 will go to the other side of your push button
30 will go to + 12 volts "White/Red"
87 will go to your starter wire "big Black/Yellow"

there is no need to cut the starter wire,
just splice into it

now the good part
the only time your push button will work is when you have put the key into the ignition #2 position

this will prevent from false starting when the key is not in the igintion,
or when the key has not been fully turned to the run position

ENJOY:D

Good Write up. 5 Stars. *****

BoominRX7 06-18-02 02:32 PM

I just wanted to thank everyone for this, I'm going to go to the store and buy the relay, some wire, etc...
I just hope I don't screw anything up... hehehe, knowing me it's very possible, but I think I can handle, I've had experience in wiring up alot of neon lights, I think I'm the only person on this forum with neon lights underneath there car, and I have alot insid also..
anyways, this shouldn't be to hard...
thanks for the help,
John W.
PS: I'll post later when all the wiring is done, and let you know that it worked (v8kilr assured me it would)

Thanks again!

BoominRX7 06-18-02 08:52 PM

I tried the wiring stuff today.
all I managed to do was put the fuel pump on a switch instead of make it a push button start, I've got an 83
Rx-7 and I don't know what I'm gonna do, I'm going to put the wiring back in place.
pleasse pm me, or email me at wwjbdoin@aol.com
or just reply here. I'll try to check every hour, thanks for the help.

what do you need to know?

i rewired my whole car from the front of the door all the way back,

that includes the whole back half of the car,
tail lights,fuel pump,fuel door,blinkers,license plate lights,etc...

my igintion doesnt even have a key,
it has a switch and a button,

my car had wire problems that you wouldnt believe

S2-13BT 07-08-02 06:26 PM

My car really needs to be rewired as well. Later though.

Your write up is good, and I'll definately give it a go soon. Hopefully I won't have any probs.

Anyway, 5 stars for a good effort.

See ya
Christian

Read that 3rd gen link article. It's step-by-step, but read the WHOLE thing before you carry it out.

You can splice the wiring harness from a 3.5" computer drive into your ignition harness and just plug in a stock Honda S2000 switch, then mount it in place of your cigarette lighter.

resurection of an old thread...MAWAHAHAHA

ok enough evil...

how do you take the cig lighter apart so you have a hole in the rectangular metal souround?

thanks

Sgt Fox 06-28-04 12:34 AM

the site is down....

leif 06-28-04 01:28 AM

leif 06-28-04 02:43 AM

what about the cig lighter? how does one get it apart with out trashing it?

leif 06-28-04 02:44 AM

i mean the housing not the atcual lighter

jammerx7gsl 06-28-04 03:34 AM

I have a kill switch wired to my starter, so you have to push the button while turning the key. Have fun trying to find the button though.

leif 06-28-04 11:09 AM

anybody?

Manntis 06-28-04 12:24 PM

should just be ehld in by a screw and a press-fit

leif 06-28-04 03:13 PM

cool, thanks

Bolox 06-29-04 05:35 AM

so howdo you actually start the car?

i take it you just push the button down untill she starts and then let go?

hmm... im on holidays now... this sounds mighty tempting!
