Problem
Hey guys...
was wondering if you could help me out with a problem on my 7. I have a 1984 rx7 and it has 120k on it... it seems to have an un-solvable problem on the throttle end... when i try to throttle it a little hard, it stutters as if it wasnt getting fuel... i have checked carb, replaced fuel filter and fuel pump... air filter is clean... any suggestions... thanks... |
are the lines clogged. you may have rust in the tank and it clogged the lines. not 100% sure but that may be the problem

Carb rebuild wouldn't hurt. If that doesn't solve it, then the fuel system is plugging. Very common promblem on our aging cars. What did the old fuel filter look like? If it was full of rust particles or goo, time to drop the fuel tank and clean it. Don't forget to rod out the hard lines coming out of the tank.
In my sig line is a link to the FSMs, download the year you need, along with the carb manual and wiring diagram. In the main FSM is the layout for the entire fuel system. |
Yeah I am in agreement with Trochoid. It sounds like a carb rebuild, or your fuel lines need to be cleaned out really well, perhaps even the gas tank..

That's pretty much what mine was doing when my primary jets were clogged. You can try this to help narrow it down though: get on the freeway, and up to a good speed, then coast for ten seconds or so and floor it. Does it do the same thing, or do you have good power when you do this? If it acts the same, then its probably clogged jets. If it acts like you have good power when you do this, then look upstream in the fuel system for the issue.

Thanks a ton guys... will work on it...

Before doing a complete rebuild, try replacing the accelerator pump diaphram. could be a quick and easy fix.

after all the things that you guys mentioned checked out fine i decided to take it to a guy that specializes in first gens and he seems to have the problem diagnosed... it seems that the vacuum advance (and trailing) canisters and the vacuum solenoid valves that control them needs replacement... we've tried looking everywhere for these parts with no luck... any help ?
thanks guys... |
I don't know. That kind of sounds like a "replace everything and then try it again" type of diagnosis...

Diaphrams in the vac advance units can go bad. Post a wtb in the 1st gen parts for sale section. Someone will them used. New are probably NLA.
