Premix oil reservoir recommendations
 

I'm thinking about doing an external premix by modding the MOP on my 12a.

I'm thinking I can go to the pull-apart and grab a big plastic, mountable
container from something to use as the reservoir. Heres my requirements:

1. Has to be safe for 2 stroke oil, won't dissolve or degrade with the oil in it.

2. I'd like something about 1/2 gallon, so I don't have to constantly fill it.

3. Easy conversion to hook an output hose to it.

4. Nice to have would be brackets.

I'm thinking I can start by looking at wiper fluid reservoirs because they are
usually pretty large but I'm worried they may not stand up to the oil.

Anyway, let the ideas fly. I'm open to any make, any model I can find in a
pull-apart here locally.

I've read that but I want a bigger reservoir than the motorcycle one he used plus
I'm not doing it with the Sohn pump, I'll mod an existing MOP to make it work.

I'm just looking for ideas for reservoirs, large ones, I can pilfer from the junkyard.

I just stumbled on a Polaris XPLORER 400 2 stroke reservoir on ebay. Looked up the
specs and it holds 2 qts, so its pretty good size. Looks like it has a level sensor
as well.

Is Polaris made by Mazda? You don't want to get too many non OEM parts in that car Tim, you might void the warranty.

Ray you know your interested in what I find here.

I can't use just any white plastic reservoir, like an old coolant one, because
the oil will eat it up in a matter of months. I know that much from reading
existing threads.

So far scooter, bike, ATV or snowmobile oil reservoirs seem to be the ticket. At least
for the size I want. I don't want to have to fill this thing constantly. Once every
4 or 5 tanks would be good.

What about a spare windshield washer reservoir? Oil will eat that? Fuel tanks for 2 cycle trimmers? They all seem to be made of the same white polyethylene plastic.

Definitely not the washer reservoir. Patman in his original thread on doing the MOP
mod for the external reservior used just that tank and in a couple of months it
turned blue and cracked and fell apart. He then made a welded aluminum one.

The fuel tanks for 2 cycle trimmers, blowers etc would work but to me they are too
small. So far the best I've seen are for ATVs or snowmobiles. They seem to be a
couple of quarts in size which is a good size, almost half a gallon.

Apparently not all cloudy white plastic containers are the same material.

Buy some SOBE juice in an aluminum can. I put a bulkhead fitting on one of those and have been using it as a catch can for years. It costs a buck and works perfect, plus you get some delicious juice. Its only 20OZ tho...

I got a stainless steel "catch can" off of ebay that was made for premix. It has a barb on the bottom and an external level sight. I'm not sure how much it holds, but it's over a quart. I can't find it again on ebay now though. I remember the sellers having it on their website though, so maybe I will be able to find that.

I remember that my old '79 SA had a premix tank maybe it is still available from dealer?

If you can't find one that has a sensor in it to tell you when it is low (knowing you :tonque:)
you can use a stock oil pan sensor. Put power into one of the connects on the censor,
the other end to a light (tie it into the dash oil light?) and ground the light.

Also, outboard motors for boats can sometimes be 2 stroke. They keep the oil
tank on top of the motor.

Hey Stu thanks for the links. I'm going to mod an existing MOP to get this done
because I'm that cheap :)

I looked at the catch can idea but they are all too small for what I want. So far
the best solution I've found is one for a Polaris ATV. It holds almost 2 qts and
looks like it would be easily mounted plus it has a low sensor.

Stu your right, I want a low sensor and I can hook into the circuit for the
existing low oil sensor.
