PreMix - how much?

did my mandatory Archive check but failed to turn up _amount_ of mix/ratio for 2-cycle premix in the gas tank.

Also, any brand suggestions (besides the MMO debate)? I want just 2-cycle premix as with motorcycles, etc. right?

Common ratio is half an ounce per gallon. Make sure the two stroke oil is TC-W3 certified. I use the wal-mart brand (blue stuff)

Mystery Oil is just fine and 3x's better...works great and smells sweet when it burns...

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm using 2oz per gallon of gas. After reading all the posts on this topic, that was the safe amount that I came away with. I guess in the end, it's better to have a little more than not enough. I do not have the OPM connected, whereas some guys still pre-mix as a safeguard, even though the OPM is in tact.

MMO is a great product, however I would not go out on a limb to say that it's better then 2 cycle oil. 2 cycle/2stroke oil was designed to be used exactly how we 7 owners are using it for----to lubricate and keep clean. Even though MMO does do that, I'm not sure I would say that it is a better product for the purpose that we use it for. But then again, like it says, "It is a mystery!"

Maybe using both wouldn't be a bad idea, but I don't know what kind of negative chemical reactions that would cause if any.

If you have the OMP still connected, I would do 0.5 oz/gallon

If the OMP is not connected, most do 1oz/gallon

There is a wide range that will probably work fine. I know some have calculated based on MPG and oil consumption that the typical injection amount for the stock OMP is something like 0.5oz/gallon. However, that calc is only good for general cruising and such. Most like to do 1oz/gallon without an OMP to stay on the safe side. It doesn't hurt to go more. You'll spend more in oil and you might get a little smoke if you go too heavy on the premix.

So 11oz and you'll be fine?

competition book says 100 to 150:1 by volume. which i think ends up being about 1oz/gallon.

Stu: Are going going full premix or just supplementing the existing OMP?

1oz/gallon works nicely for a full premix. The FBs have about a 16 gallon tank, so a pint per tank works out pretty well. You'll be a little heavy on the premix with the full pint as even with a low tank, it'll only be about 14 gallons to fill. Since you have an SA, I bet you never put in more than about 12 gallons, though.

I used 1oz per gallon in my FC for years with no ill effects.

Use non-synthetic (mineral based) 2-stroke motorcycle oil...here's the stuff I used to buy.

I usually put in about 1 to 1 1/2 ounce per gallon in. No OMP and I take it to track days every once in a while. It doesn't hurt to use a little more premix than usual, but there is a point when it is too much. You don't want to foul your plugs do you? :)

General consensus has been 1 oz/gal, (128:1). The 3rd gens, with their electronic MOPs have gotten the ratio down to 600/800:1 during certain conditions. I was more than suprised when I read that tidbit and suspect that it doesn't happen often. Normal oil level drop is about 1 qt/3k miles.

Personally, keeping the MOP operational but pulling pre-mix from a seperate tank is the best option, imho. Causes problems with turbo cars since the oil level tends to increase over time due to the fuel mix bypassing the side seals and oil control rings as the engine wears.

I don't wanna keep this old thread going here but do yall use premium gas too with the premix? I was under the impression that pre mixing lowered the octane content and you should use higher octane gas. Is that correct?

I use regular. Less octane for na engines is thought to be beneficial.
